I will never upgrade to a 400D. When I upgrade it will be to a much better camera.

Rebel XTi is coming in September....what do you think?

Well, I guess Canon made a few changes to the rebel....added a 10.1MP, a self cleaning sensor, 9 point autofocus and a 2.5 inch LCD.

I can't decide if I had known this in July when I bought the rebel xt, if I would have waited.....I would have like the 9 point autofocus and the LCD being larger though.

What do you guys think?

Tempted by the 400D. Very tempted. The new AF system says it all.

I did the same thing, but I don't regret it. I love the camera, and i'm hoping to switch to the 30D by spring time.

Local paper ad maybe? eBay....people on eBay are nuts. They pay more than retail for used quite often, but then you get hit with eBay fees...so it's pretty much a wash (sortof).

my experience is that selling on e bay has become impossible since Nigerian conmen are always first in and you end up paying cost of advert with no sale (noone would be stupid enough to actually try and follow through such a sale).

I fel foer the the people who've just bought a 350D, but then again, I cant see why they would want to bother with the 40D, just for the extra 2mp and focal foints. Who actually uses anything but centre anyway? I dont on my Fuji. :)

If I had a 350D right now that i had owned for say, a year, I would probably wait for the 30D to drop and then get that, in say 3-4 months. Remember, the 30D is a relativly new camera right now.

f had just bought a 350D, I would wait until I was ready to move up (not across) and go for a 30D next year or even a 1D, the 30D wont be replaced anytime soon.

It isn't the 2 extra points, it is the fact that the entire AF system has been replaced with that of the 30D. Have you ever used the XT/350D? If so you would know that the AF is one of the biggest complaints about the camera. The 30D system is much better and is now on the XTi/400D.

so now the question is this (at least for me, and i expect others are in a similar situation):

is the ~$400 price difference between 30D and 400D worth it for the differences (based on the excellent chart jaymrobinson put together):

- mag body
- faster fps
- less resolution (8 vs 10)
- heavier weight
- more shots per battery charge
- 1/8000 shutter max speed
- viewfinder slightly larger
- lack of sensor cleaning
- spot metering
- controls
- potentially longer rated shutter life

of all one the ones listed above, none really clinch it for me, except for the great unknown, which is the ease of controls (spot metering is fairly significant too). i've never used a 10D/20D/30D model w/ the speed dial, so i don't know what i am missing; however, this could be the largest difference worth it to me (i do tend to change ISO, aperture and metering frequently). the body weight i'd prefer a lighter body; the mag/plastic doesn't bother me; it's not like my rebXT is showing signs of wear and abuse. the other bits are really not worth talking about either.

the biggest reason i want to upgrade my body from the rebXT is the crosspoint/fast lens increase in AF...this, i think, would make my concert shooting keeper rate increase. so it makes sense that i should look at either the 400D or 30D (the 5D is too much $, and i don't want to buy a used 20D).

the other intangible is the 'entry' level stigma the 400D will have...i feel like i've gotten substantially better in the last few months, and while i've still got loads to learn, i'm no longer a greenhorn. subconsciously, carrying around a 350D/400D will have that label applied to me wrt to some people. should it matter? absolutely no. but having better equipment can make a superficial difference. maybe i'm blathering on about nonsense here.

I'll keep my 350D and invest in some lenses. Maybe later I'll upgrade (but to the next range, not to the successor ;-)a )

I'm thinking about waiting to see what happens. I am happy with my 350D. I had rather add to my lenses and upgrade the body later. I had rather make a move upwards rather than side ways. Maybe the 40D?

exactly same story here. 6-7 monts of googling and studying the features of different models, reading forums etc.. then finally after all the waiting made my move, and after a month Canon tells that 350D is replaced by 400D.. wish there was buyers guide for Canons like there is one for Apple computers (http://buyersguide.macrumors.com/ (external link)), so newbies like me would not make complitely wrong timed purchases.. anybody know one? (not that it would help me much now)

well. am going to keep my 350D anyway, try to make most of it and learn to master it..

Hmm...I think I’m gonna upgrade from my XT.

First I love my XT very much but have a few complaints about it:

That small top window with camera settings is a pain in the butt trying to read in dimly lit surroundings. While trying to push the back-light button I push every other button first! With the XTi it will be convenient having one screen with all info.

I don’t like the small XT LCD monitor for image review...the Larger 2.5" LCD monitor of the XTi will be dandy! Sure it will eat into battery time...but I have seven so no big deal and I can turn it off when shooting.

My XT has OK focus but would like to have more accurate focus with the XTi as I use the 50mm 1.4 a lot.

I can sell my XT for about $400 or so...the XTi will cost me $400.00!

The XT image folders has a 100 image max that’s an annoyance as I have to open each and every folder and drag and drop into a new folder...I welcome the XTi’s 9999 images in one folder.

The XT settings can only be saved after hitting the set button...while the XTi’s setting adjustment is saved with half-press of shutter release, so very convenient and intuitive.

More Pixels...when the 8 meg XT replaced the 6 meg Rebel everyone said the jump is insignificant...now they are saying the same...come on every little bit helps in my book. I have to take advantage of my Epson 4800 printer.

Also I shoot panorama, a bigger camera like the 30D would not fit on my pano arm.

Just took a quick look at completed eBay auctions for an XT - body only. The prices range from a few at $550 or so, up to $799. Most in $600 to $700 range.

eBay buyers are stupid a lot of time.
