I am not sure if this is the right place to post or not, but I am not sure where else to go!

This evening I attempted to take a picture of my son eating his birthday cake. The first shot I took I realized I had the lens and the camera on manual focus. I switch both to auto, and P.

As I was reviewing my pictures tonight, the first 7 or 8 pictures aren't in JPG files. They are in CRW and THM files. What ARE those files, and how can I get them onto my computer? I can view the pictures in my camera, but not on my computer.

Can anyone help?

Thank you!

Somehow you managed to set your camera to save the photos as RAW files. RAW are a proprietary format developed by Canon to save the uncompressed file from the sensor and get the most data from it. JPG's are compressed and converted versions of this data.

To get the file into your computer you can either use a card reader or the special software that came with your camera. This software will also allow you to convert the files to JPGS.

Thank you Mark. I had wondered that, because it was set to take RAW pics on manual somehow, but I am not sure how it transferred over to continue taking RAW when I switched back to automatic. Thanks for your help, now I have to hunt down my camera's software!

You never know - you may find yourself liking RAW. It does have various advantages, and I use it almost all the time, though it doesn't give you 'ready to go' pictures like JPEG.

I'm not going to turn this into a RAW versus JPEG thread. The truth is that both have their advantages and disadvantages, and this may be a great opportunity to explore that for yourself, as only you can decide which is best for your shooting.

Amazing!!!

I was curious about using RAW, which is how it was apparantly set up to shoot as raw...I just know NOTHING about it. I honestly had no idea you could take a photo such as the Sunliner original and turn it into that finished piece. WOW!
