"No professional photography of any sort is allowed in the Museum galleries without the permission from the curatoral staff. Photography for personal reference is allowed but, to help preserve the collections on display, we ask visitors not to use flash photography. High quality reproductions of key items from the exhibitions are available as postcards and prints from the Museum's shops."

This is their only reference to the photographer. Thus I was lured on a 250 mile drive, hotel cost and 32 pounds entrance fee. At the first exhibit I was stopped from entering and told "..no tripods allowed." I asked where this was displayed and the bottom of a poster was lifted revealing underneath what they were now saying. I got my 32 pounds back and left immediately. What a deceiptfull bunch.

They even said that no photography of any kind was allowed on the HMS Victory. Yet at its entrance was a sign saying "photography allowed but not at the portrait of the dying Nelson".

Hi Blu82,

No "Professional" Photography in a Museum? That's hardly unsual.

Anyway, I've just taken a look at the Portsmouth Historic Dockyard Website, under the Visitor Information it clearly states:

"Photography and Media
Visitors can use flash cameras except in Mary Rose Exhibition where light sensitive materials are on display.

No photography is allowed on board HMS Victory or inside the Royal Naval Museum.

If you would like to contact the P.R. office, please telephone 023 9289 4550"

Sorry you had a wasted journey but it is there.

Regards
Nigel

I have checked their website again. It still does not refer to tripod use (my sole complaint). You have missed the point. I did not attempt to use a flash or take "professional" pictures. The only restriction placed on me was after I had payed my £32 entrance fee. The trpod restriction was written on a window mounted memo that could be accessed only by an official by lifting up a calender.

Disgusting, disreputable and typical of this place.

I have been planning a visit to the historic dockyards but if photographers are unwelcome there is much of the attraction of the place denied me. What is this country coming to?
