Hi All
Anyone know if any of the Canon Cameras can do IR photography with a R72 filter? Also which lens would be best? I have the 5D and hubbie has the 20D.

Thanks.

There are a gazillion threads about this on here. Too many that I wouldn't know which exact one or two to send you to.

In short, either of your cameras can do IR with an R72 type filter but be prepared for some very long exposure times (20 seconds give or take). This means that trying to do something on a windy day where you have flexible type subject matter (ie trees) is difficult.

I knew a lady in Montreal that did alot of this and she did a great job too. See her webiste http://rachelita.com/ (external link) and follow the links for IR. She has some explanations on there and also further reference links.

I took my 10D and had it modified by Life Pixel (external link) and it does a pretty good job. It is not cheap and I certainly wouldn't do that to one of my more current bodies. It can be converted back but in the meantime that is all that body is good for.

My life is like one big RAW file....way too much post processing needed.

Thanks for the link - really nice website. She refereences the same page I had read and it hasn't been updated since 2002. I was hoping someone would have done some more recent work, especially listing more cameras that might be IR sensitive.

I'll continue to research - thanks

I have followed IR capability as an interest of mine.

So far the only Canon DSLRs I am aware of that can't do any form of IR is the D60.
I can personally confirm the 10D and 1DsMkII can do IR. Other folks have reported on the 20D, 30D, 300D, 350D, and 5D as having IR capabilities. Of course the 20Da has it made.

Canon cameras only do IR in the near IR region, up to somewhere between 850-900nm at the most. Common IR film usually goes to 1100nm before you have to start getting speciality film and filters.

Just what I have learned.
