Just starting up my Gallery...

Hi,

I've just set up my gallery for public viewing. I'm still new to the whole EE thing, but before I add too many images, I thought I'd try to solicit some feedback - especially on how the gallery itself is set up and suggestions to make it better.

It's just a smattering of photos right now - pretty randomly picked. Some new (EOS 10D), some very old from scanned slides, etc. I want to make sure I have the structure of the gallery set up well for human interaction before I go adding a whole mess of photos.

It's all running off of my own server over an ADSL line, so the upload speed is only 128K baud - please be patient, epsecially if you view the "Base" size images.

The site is excellent and the shots stunning. I have just put my gallery up too and had to trawl back of '000's of images. I did consider to put up EXIF info too but decided against it for 2 reasons.

First, it was alot of work and secondly I'm not sure those looking at it would be that interested. To us photographers however, it's fascinating and I poured over the your stats.

I did love the ability to download the original for viewing and am thinking to do this too. I am worried about shots getting stolen though if available in such high res.

I have a 2mbs broadband line which is extremly fast and it took about 15 seconds to get a high res image. I don't imagine people will wait if they have dial up or slower bands. I don't care though because I thought it was great.

Sigma? are they as good as people say? - seems that way from your shots.

Thank you for your kind words. In fact, I don't post the original size of the images, and as you will note, all of my images (except the thumbnails) have a watermark. As such, I'm not too worried about theft. Additionally I have left in the copyright disclaimer on every page.

As for the EXIF info, that gets generated automatically for those images that have it. It's part of Pekka's excellent Exhibit Engine, so it's no trouble to show it. I know that I find it interesting to see how other photographers decided to capture a certain image, so I like to retunr the favor.

And finally, I would say that SOME Sigma lenses are excellent. The same is true of Canon, Tamron, etc. My tendency, however, is to go with Canon lenses as their high quality lenses are really unbeatable.

The Sigma 15-30 EX lens is a really nice lens, if a bit on the bulky side. This doesn't bother me too much as I'm 6'1", 200 lbs. so while others have commented on the size, I've never found it to be much of a problem. It's really pretty light - especially compared to the 70-200 f/2.8L IS!!

Cool stuff, I was looking at the ones if Ireland and Scotland and was impressed! I am creating a page for my pics of England/Wales and wherever else I go. Did you get a chance to see Wales? Wales is cool too! I've been there twice now and enjoy the heck out of it. All I have now, is a pic of Carew Castle, Dyfed, Wales on the site I'm putting together. It needs a lot more work. No clue when I will have the time...makes for a good rainyday project. We all know that there are plenty of them here in England! I see you had cloudcover in both places. Hopefully that was all you had. August, I should think would be great. How did you like it over here? I can't get over it here. It is the best here. I should think you saw Hadrian's Wall. Tell me that's not old! Not! You were standing on many thousands and thousands of years of history and that is what I find really fascinating about over here. I know this much, I'm not looking forward to leaving here!

I actually have a lot more photos of Ireland and Scotland. We were there this summer for 3 weeks - the last 2 weeks of August in Ireland and the first week in September in Scotland. We had terrific weather! One and 1/2 days of rain in that entire time!

I wish we had had time to get to Wales and also to parts of England as well, but as it was we did not really have enough time to see what we wanted to in Ireland and Scotland. I did get to play a round of golf with a gentelman from Wales however, when I was on the Inishowen Penisula. Wonderful guy!

The history of those places is a large part of what makes it all so special - especially as it is history that we are familiar with. Besides all that, the country we saw was just magnificently beautiful, both in Ireland and in Scotland.

Eventually I will put up more photos from that trip, but I've got about a dozen project going on right now, so time is a bit short

Glad you had a great time over here. It is a shame that more people don't get over here. They really can't imagine what they are missing. Let's see here, I've also been to Austria twice to go skiing both times. Actually, that was my first time skiing. Did you look at topic #17977 on the forum, it is "First pics w/ Sigma 120-300mm F2.8 EX/HSM" thread started by me. There is many more I will be posting as I get the time. It has been really hectic lately, and with Christmas around the corner it is getting real crazy real quick. I am planning a trip to Northern England shortly, so that ought to be interesting. It is my goal to get to York as well as a lot of other places whilst up there in Yorkshire. Ah, yes, yorkshire pudding to go with Sunday roast. You must have gotten a chance to sample the pubs! I really like them as you can go grap a meal, or have a pint and be merry. I like it over here a lot and can't say enough good stuff about over here.

Well, I'm taking you must have heard the Welsh accent. It is rather interesting, I do say. One thing about Wales that has been imprinted in my head forever is this town in Angelsey. It starts and ends Llanfair..............​.gogogoch
Check out the site www.llanfair.com and see what I'm talking about. Ok, so it's not quite that long, but darn near! I really think you would like Wales given that you liked Scotland and Ireland!

It is all about the history of over here that the US can't even begin to touch and has me captivated.

I look forward to seeing those pics and another bit, I will pass on the link as I have more pics. One isn'rt woth it and I want to redesign it anyway.
