Reading on different forums about people waiting for the next generation, e.g. DIGIC III; what are you expecting / looking forward to in the next DIGIC chip?

I’m just wondering what good it will do for the cameras lower than 1D. Higher dynamic range is one thing I can think of, but beyond that?

I’m not looking for rumors, just your thoughts. ;)

Well higher dynamic range would be fantastic but I'm sure nobody would mind larger and quicker-clearing buffers... What else is the Digic chip responsible for?

++ Matter of fact, what is the chip responsible for in the first place anyway? I never really looked into it :p

I think it is both actually... but maybe more the sensor. The DIGIC II is more or less the brain of the camera, handeling both image processing and camera control.

I don't think that was quite the same subject, even though it was about DIGIC II, and a future DIGIC III. I was more interested in what you are expecting, what you would want from the next DIGIC, not looking for rumors. But I guess these subjects are too close then?

The processor isn't responsible of high dynamic range, but the CMOS sensor.
Personally, I don't expect another Digic version, but improved CMOS sensor and Focus sensor.

What you want and what you expect are fairly similar, unless we are talking about unrealistic "wants."

I think that differs a lot from person to person.;)

But higher dynamic range would also drastically increase the amount of data that needs to be handled and processed. I would expect that a new and improved chip would be needed for that, one that would be optimized for dynamic range.

Anything to get the equivalent of this on a 1.6x 10-12mp sensor : http://www.dpreview.com …ws/fujifilmf30/page14.asp (external link)

If Fuji can do this on a P&S Canon has no excuse. 10-12mp APSC sensor clean ISO 1600, max ISO 6400 or 12800. Nothing else. I don't care for huge buffers and stuff like that. And a much improved AF sistem The ones on 350/400/20/30/5D are a joke. High precision (Pentax precision) 16 well placed points (not crowded in the middle). That's all.

If you want that kind of image you already can use heavy loads of Neat Image on ISO 800 and above. But I think Canon thought that serious photographers would want to handle noise by themselves and the amount they want, not throwing them flat and plasticy images to start with.

I have to agree on that. Noise is hardly a problem, as long as I’m able to handle the PP myself. You really shouldn’t compare pictures straight out of the camera from a P&S and a DSLR.

Noise should be handled on the sensor. If it is done on chip it is noise reduction and must result in loss of detail.

I'm no expert but it seems to me that Canon is best at low noise sensors while others brag about noise reduction.

Speaking of features on camera processors, is face recognition a benefit?
