Just found this very old thread. Very interesting and informative. I've had my 580EX for maybe 10 years now and never knew about the distance scale. It is barely mentioned in the manual. Lots to learn still about this useful gadget.

You post lead me to search my 380EX, and realize it does not have a LCD screen on the back LOL.

Yeah, the good old 580EX, still works on every Canon body without any firmware update.
