I get an email every now and again from EOS magazine.

I got one on Fri saying

---------------

Price corrections

There were two price errors in the e-mail sent to you yesterday.
The price of the EOS 400D body only is £649.99 (not £549.99). The correct price was given on our web site. Canon has sent us a correction to the price of the EF 70-200mm f4L IS USM lens. The RRP of this will be £989.99, not £689.99. We are updating our website.
---------------

How does this compare to the USA prices?

Also I wonder if the prices originally given are pretty close to the "buy" price for most retailers.

Very expensive. Very. I worked this out for one of the guys in the macro forums yesterday. UK prices are ugly.

That is far too expensive IMO.
I picked my 2.8 IS up from digital rev for £1050 inc p&p with no import tax guaranteed.

If the 400D IS this expensive in the UK, that makes my decision to upgrade easy (i.e. from 300D -> 30D/400D), it'd be the 30D every time. Far too expensive for entry level.

Jessops are already offering pre-ordering for 400D at £649 body only, confirming your updated info.

Last xmas Canon had the rebate on the 350D to make it more appealing and within reach as a starter DSLR, and i'm wondering if they'll do the same again this year. When i bought my 350D just before xmas, i had to get around to 3 different Jessops stores before i found one in stock.

I'm guessing it proved a very popular promotion.

My Canon can.. I just need to find out how

The prices will drop in a month or so - even more if you can bear to wait till the New Year. Being the first in to buy new tech is crazy - you'll pay the highest prices and guinea-pig the quality control for the rest of us!

There was another thread recently quoting Mathers of Lancashire listing the 400D for £499, and RGB Technology also have it listed for that ...although I've been waiting since June for RGB to send me email saying they have stock of the 17-55 f2.8 IS at £729 (I actually bought it in July from Mifsuds for £699).

Went into RGB labs (Middlesbrough) on saturday and if I can remember said that they had 20 - 400D's on order and expected something like a dozen to be delivered in the first batch. Price was indeed £499 for body.

Also had started to get some higher end (canon L) lenses in stock so maybe supply is loosening up.

Must say I have found this shop to be super helpful and much more "user freindly" than a certain other camera retail chain (who happens to own the shop next door but one!!!).

RGB is certainly my first stop local store now.

Hope this is of some use to someone.

Cheers

Rob

So what's Graeme got in stock just now then Rob?

If I remember rightly, RGB were extremely competitive on price when the 30D was launched.

Cheers,

Simon.

Simon,

Pls excuse my memory - I took my daughter (aged 11yrs old) with me to suss out a 350D for xmas for her only for your man to convince her she would be better off with the 400D (not that she needed much help to convince) so I was a bit distracted - and my memory is vodka induced poor.

I think he had a 17-40, 24-105 and 70-200 in L. He has openly admitted last couple of times I have been in that canon supply is tight and had a good range of Sigma and Tamron alternatives inc 17-50 Tamron which looked nice.

Can only speak as I find and he seems a really nice bloke.

Cheers

Rob
