I'm sure many of us on here have read through a bit of the strobists site (and equivalents like dg28.com)....and boy have they had an effect. I'm trying to get into off-camera flash work (can't afford a 430ex/580ex anyway) and the price of old flashes on ebay is amazing - people paying 50-60 pounds (thats 150 dollars) for SB-24s or 430EZs...direct cause and effect?

or just that Joe Sixpack buys an old flash with the expectation to be able to plonk it on his shiny new alpha (or whatever) and snap away, thinking he's got a bargain?

I think the increasing prices of the sb flashes have a lot to do with david's site. He's turned on a whole new crowd to using manual flashes and learning how to light effectively, retailers probably recognize this and are increasing their prices (plus auction values are increasing).
I got lucky and paid $24 for my sb24 a few months ago, and I bought an sb28 from adorama for $94, still very much a bargain compared to current flashes. I use my stuff on manual anyway, so any ettl is useless for me, unless I'm using the 420ex. It's a lot more fun to think about lighting instead of letting the machinery think for me :)

Yes, and I paid $41 for the first SB-24 I bought, $48 for the second (two months ago) and finally paid $57 for the last, three weeks ago!

But isn't better to spend $150 in three used SB-24, than $380 in a single 580ex?

I just bought an SB-26... how do you guys do it?... make it work as a slave with your canon flash? What is your setup?

I tried playing around with it, and either:

a) no effect in the final image (even though the SB-26 slave flashed) because I think the pre-flash already triggered it.

b) so I switched to MANUAL, and set to 2nd curtain sync... played with delay on the SB-26, and now, my shots are overexposed...

Tips? Can someone point me in the right direction?

What should be the setting on the SB flashes? Thanks.
