I experimented a little with 3D stereo photography last week while in Bodie. I was pretty happy with these two, though they aren't quite up to par with what Balliolman accomplishes. I'm still working on that... :D

Well they work for me, is it simply a "step to the right?"

Yes, that's it. Or, actually in this case, lean to the right. I was kneeling to get a low perspective in both of these shots, so I couldn't step right very easily.

Thanks, Digi. I liked the second one the best of the two, also. In fact, the more I look at them, the more I'm liking both...

Good work, Tom! Both stereos have their merits. :-) My preference is for #1 the ridgeline is a neat stereo feature to complete the effect of depth. I suggest putting script on both chips or neither as the current set up is a retinal rivalry. A program like Stereo Photo Maker easily facilitates writing on each chip which can be viewed with depth.

This location looks great for 3D with all those old buildings. Next time slot such as this into Travel and Landscapes and put a link into the 3D sticky. (The sticky was the way I found this.) Welcome to the stereo fold, Buddy, let's see more! :D

Thanks for the compliment! I wrestled with whether I should put the watermark in there or not, but it's such an ingrained part of my workflow it didn't feel right to not do it. I did use Stereo Photo Maker to line the images up and create the border, but I haven't looked into many of it's other features yet. I'll have to check out those text features.

I found a small flaw in that second one, in the bush in the lower left corner. There's one branch that moved between the two shots. I did three sets for this one, so I'll have to look at the other pictures and see if I can find two that match up a little better.

Good technical eye, Tom. Cha-cha outside invariably means having to cope with movement caused by the wind. I cope by shooting static subjects and trying to mask potential areas of movement when composing a shot. I have grown to accept a certain amount of cha-cha artefact caused by the wind or moving water particularly if it is in the background and mild. This is especially so if the stereo is a grabshot of a place I am unlikely to visit again.

The freezing of action is done with a synched dual rig (expensive) or with a beamsplitter lens (cheaper though with limitations).

Post more, Tom, soon! :-)

Nice work, well done, I have to go with the first one as my favorite. To my eyes there seems to be something a little off on the second, not much, but it seemed a little more difficult for me anyway to hold the 3D. Both are good.

Thanks, Sandy. You're probably getting hung up on that branch that moved in the second one.

There's a sticky at the top of this forum all about it. It's here: https://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=87970

To view these, you need to sit back a couple feet from your monitor and cross your eyes. Your right eye should be looking at the image on the left and your left eye looking at the one on the right. When you get the two pictures to merge into one in your sight, it will have three dimensional depth.

It can take a while to get it to lock in the first time so you can see it, but once you have it figured out it starts to get real easy. Keep trying. ;)

Those are cool.

Is it just the way the two shots are right next to eachother that makes it 3d or is there something in the taking of the shots?
