I have faced those problems too, due to barrel/pincushion distortion. Maybe you can give a try to PTLens to try to correct it a little bit...

Canon 500D. Tamron 17-50 f2.8. Canon 55-250 f4-5.6 IS. Canon 50mm f1.4.
