I am wondering what is the price tag of this lens now, I saw in amazon it is $460 but I just ordered now from central-digital $399. Is it ok?

I am happy to say that this is my first Lens with my first DSLR 50D :D
Please guide me something to check on my first lens.

edit: I returned 18-200mm for this lens, is it really worth it by IQ?

I cut the wings off but I'm impressed with this Tamron 17-50. I have to use a +5 micro adjustment in C.Fn for this lens though.

I owned the vc version for a while and it wasn't as good a lens in my opinion.

Finally ordered this lens today! I couldn't decide whether to get the 15-85 or hang out for the sigma 17-50 but after looking through this thread decided to just get it. For $400AU brand new its such a bargain and at half the cost of the other two I can live with the lack of stabilzation and noisy focus.

Hopefully I get a good copy.

How does the autofocus on this lens compare to the 18-55mm IS kit lens?

Quick and accurate if properly calibrated. Noisier than the 18-55 (which in itself has very good AF performance), and a smidgen slower (although being an f/2.8 it has to be a bit more precise about it).

The autofocus works well in decent light, and works pretty well in low light when you try to focus on high contrast areas. Otherwise the autofocus will constantly hunt.

This is one where the lack of VC produced a cool effect.

Hey guys,

Not sure if you know about this, but Tamron offers a $45 rebate on this lens, as long as you purchase from an authorized Tamron dealer.

I'm thinking about buying it from Amazon (free ship, no tax), and it would come out to about $415. Good price?

I'm posting some shots I took with my newly arrived 17-50 here if anyone wants to take a look. Or I could just post them here, but I thought that'd be redundant. Loving this lens so far, as sharp as my nifty fifty and a fast AF(and accurate too as far as I can tell). Funnily enough the thing that impresses me most of the bat when I held it was the zoom ring; it's nice and deeply ribbed(try not to think condom) and sturdy, lens doesn't creep and the zooming motion is nice and smooth nonetheless. Focus ring is smooth like butter.
