Love the lighting and expression in this shot.

The photos look great.
I have two questions about this lens.
Will I be able to see a clear improvement over the 18-55IS in how sharp the images are?
Is there a problem using AF in low light? I have seen reports of this in reviews. If AF is good, then it makes sense to get an f2.8 lens as an "upgrade" from my 18-55IS.
My 18-55IS is a sharp lens. Is this one "better?"

Yes, it's better although the 18-55 IS is a pretty nice piece of glass.
I haven't tried my Tamron in the very dark but i guess it's surely no slower than the kit lens for sure.

This is not an easy question to answer because it depends what type of photography you're into.
With landscapes we tend to use f8 - f16 which is within the 'comfort' zone of both lenses so you won't see much of a difference with sharpness. Although the colour is better with the Tamron.
However with portraits you might use f2.8 if you want to blur the background and you can't really do that with the kit lens so the Tamron is better.
Having said that it's actually a bit soft wide open.

Also bear in mind that the Tamron is a third party lens so all copies vary considerably. Some will pair with your camera much better than others.

I will admit I would rather have the Canon 17-55 2.8 but not at twice the price. Here is one from the other day,
