the first one was metered about 2/3 of a stop below ambience and a single speedlight was shot through an umbrella to bring up exposure on the subjects. Shoot through umbrellas are probably the best lighting you could use for group shots.
The second image was plain ambient exposure only with no flash. Because it was indoors and i had no flash that day. As a result i needed a high ISO. Never be afraid of high ISO. Getting a noisy shot is far better than getting a blurry shot because you insist the ISO must be low.

I fight that conundrum every day. Gonna be shooting indoor hockey tonight and I have to force myself to go past 800.

what camera you have? my 60D can deliver crisp images even at ISO1600. to help things along you should expose a bit higher than you usually do (without clipping important highlights) and shoot in RAW. you then pull back the exposure and noise reduce in ACR or LR. you will gain atleast a stop or 2 of noise. dont let the camera display fool you, the canon is no where near as good as adobe when it comes to noise reduction. if youre willing to lose some megapixels, you can reduce the size of your images too. all my high ISO stuff i reduce to around 3 megapixels which gains a further 2 stops or so of noise. so an ISO6400 image can be made to look like an ISO400-800 image if you follow the above advice. if i were you i would experiment when shooting the hockey. go through all the ISO range right up to the maximum native setting and later when youre at the PC you can see for yourself. also dont try and smear out the noise with heavy handed noise reduction. the noise is needed to an extent for a bit of texture on the image to make it look more crisp. its normally accepted for sports photograpy

shooting with the T2i. I am an outdoors action photographer so ISO issues never really become an issue for me. Indoors has really played with my mind. I am trying tonight to shoot through the ISO range and see how it comes out. I am hoping I wont have to go up abvoe 1600. I tried 400 last time and ended up shooting at 1/250 and less with a 2.8 lens. I really wanted at least 1/1000 so Im gonna have to really push what I think are the limits. We will just have to see what I end up with.
