Bought this lens about a week ago. Works like a charm. For about $500 (new) this one is very good. It could have been sharper at F/2.8, but F/3.2 onwards it is sharp. Here's a sample photo at almost 17 mm at F/3.2. Man was sitting right next to me. Removed distortion slightly in Lightroom converted it to BW to reduce the bright-coloured clutter at the back, which was taking away from this person's ebony complexion. (Note: this is a 60 kb facebook quality image).

this lens is razor sharp at 17mm even on f/2.8, not sure what other lenses you tried, but not many are sharper than this..

only at 50mm, this lens needs step up to f/3.5.

facebook quality destroys any differences between sharpest lens on market and worst lens.
sharpness differences are noticable only on 100% crop level of FULL-RES picture.

palad, as the person who shot this picture in RAW, I am basing my opinion on sharpness based on 100% crop of the RAW picture that I have processed to JPG, not on a facebook quality image. :) The photo I have uploaded here is a facebook quality image and I mentioned it so that you don't look at this picture for the sharpness.

Regarding sharpness at f/2.8 on 17mm, I am glad you told me that the problem is more on the longer focal lengths than the shorter focal lengths. I will keep that in mind.

Just to understand better did you buy this VC or the non VC lens?
because non VC is around 400$ in India.

cheers

Sorry my mistake with dollar conversion. It cost me INR 24300/- and its a non-VC version. My knowledge of conversion rates is a little foggy.

sure, no problem:)
interesting fact is that new VC version looks better on longer focal lenghts.

How did you manage to get such clean pictures @ ISO 6300 from that sensor?

I wanted something to replace my 40mm 2.8, which I returned to Adorama so I got this. Unfortuntely it does not perform like the 40mm. Not only is the 17-50 not nearly as sharp as the 40mm, but getting consistently clean, sharp images while wipe open is a chore.

comparing a prime to a zoom will always result in the prime being sharper. Its just the way it goes. But my copy is not that far off from my 40mm.
