Evening all,

I just thought I'd post up a few pictures by way of a "hello" to POTN.

All taken hand-held at 400mm with the Canon 30D and 100-400mm IS, converted from RAW in Bibble Lite, tweaked in Photofiltre(!)

I've only been a "Canon Guy" since June, having been a Nikon user before that: loved the D70, hated - I mean hated - the D200!

And so, here I am...

;)

I'm still getting used to the new camera (I've only been taking photographs since May of last year) but I have to say that I'm 100% converted to Canon.

Welcome Keith. All excellent photos. I don't know that I've ever seen a Rook or a Stonechat before.

Don't know if you're going for a special effect on the linnet - looks like it could use white and black points set. It's a stunning photo as is.

Thanks for the kind welcome, all.

These are just a few random pictures which I posted to get the ball rolling - I'll dig out some examples which I'm happier with next time.

Hi Tupe,

no, no special effects on the linnet: it's just one of those pictures that I never feel I've done a good job with, in PP!

;)

I should also add that it's a pretty heavy crop - these aren't easy birds to get near to, and 400mm has to work pretty hard,

The colours in this pic are actually pretty true to life though.

It was a grey, dull day when I took it, and I was using Auto WB in camera - but I did select a different WB setting in Bibble (the "as shot" WB value was more or less the same as "cloudy", but I thought it looked better with the "sunny" WB preset).

I'm interested in your comment about setting the black and white points - do you feel like explaining that to a keen (relative) newbie?

TIA

Well Keith, these shots are amazing and taken with the Canon, you certainly have got into this camera very quick.
The detail on each of the birds is excellent. The male Stonechat is the best shot for me for pose, composition and catch-light to the eye, apart from the blade of grass it's a perfect shot.
Well done.
