OK, OK, I bought L glass... You SOBs.. :)

Just came home with a combination Christmas/Birthday present (both dates well in the future)... A 100-400 IS USM L.. Compared it to the Signa 50-500 and it was no contest. The Sigma was much heavier, longer, (as expected), but the IS sold me. Looking forward to giving it a workout this weekend!

Thanks to everyone on the board for lots of comments on the various choices... Your good advice just cost me a lot of money!

Glad to read this thread. I am going to take my Sigma 50-500mm back today. I will get my money back. Now the delima, do I use the $900 plus chare an extra $400 on my CC to get the L lens? Or do I just buy a regular 70-300 Canon lens and save the money for the 100-400L lens? What would a NORMAL person do? HELP

Us normal? The jury's still out on that one. I have two sayings when it comes to cameras:

1. Canon. Always Canon.
2. L. Always L.

Nuff said.

My first L series lens with IS, sold me on the lenses and the technology. When I bought my 70-200, the IS desiscion was an easy one.

I guess taste are personal. Since the arrival of my 50-500 it has become the lens of choice and my general purpose outdoor lens. My 70-200 f/2.8L stays in the case except for portrait sessions. My Canon 24mm f/2.8 is used for scenic landscaps. Opticaly I find the 50-500 every bit as good of better than the 70-200. Perhaps it is that it is one of the latest production being less than 45 days old.

It almost makes me homesick for the Bay Area. Not quite, though. Still too many pictures. The next time I'm up there, I want to get up to Lexington Reservoir and try to get some pictures of the Santa Clara Crew Team practicing. Their boathouse is up there, and they out on the lake quite often in the mornings. I would imagine there are some good photo opportunities there.

The bluish cast is from the late evening sun reflecting off of a blacktop road they were about to cross just out of the top of the image.

And Tom, right now Lexington is pulled down to probably 3-5 % capacity, probably in prep for the winter storms

I remember several years ago when they drained it almost completely. It was interesting because you could still barely make out where the railroad had run through there as well as a couple other 'landmarks' that have been underwater since they built the dam.

My brother-in-law used to row on the SCU Crew Team, and he took me out in a 2-man boat on a couple occasions. It was a little scary being in a boat that was even more inherently unstable than I tend to be (in a figurative sense), but early mornings on the water can be really lovely. I can't tell you how many times I've hiked from downtown Los Gatos up to the dam and back.

Oh well, maybe I miss the place a little more than I thought.
