I remember several years ago when they drained it almost completely. It was interesting because you could still barely make out where the railroad had run through there as well as a couple other 'landmarks' that have been underwater since they built the dam.
My brother-in-law used to row on the SCU Crew Team, and he took me out in a 2-man boat on a couple occasions. It was a little scary being in a boat that was even more inherently unstable than I tend to be (in a figurative sense), but early mornings on the water can be really lovely. I can't tell you how many times I've hiked from downtown Los Gatos up to the dam and back.
Oh well, maybe I miss the place a little more than I thought.
