Just recieved this today in the mail and so far I am impressed. I traded my 400 5.6L for it as I felt the focal length of the 300mm would be of more use right now. Anyway here is a few quick hand held shots with the 300.

Very nice! I'm going to be looking for more reach in 6-12 months, and was thinking along the lines of the 100-400L
Is your preference for primes? I'm more keen on zooms for their versatility but the IQ of the long primes is incredible.

Hey Dan, I presume that is your daughter in shot #3. If so, could you frame a shot in a similar manner but shot with something in the 50-100mm range, so that it becomes possible for everyone to see the difference in perspective, shooting a portrait with a classic portraiture focal length vs. with a long telephoto?

Thanks everyone for the nice comments, the 400 is a great lens especially for birding but lately I have not had as much time for such and have found that the 300mm range would better suite me as well as being able to use a TC for both my 135L and my 300L so I'm now looking for a Canon 1.4 II TC. I felt this was the most cost effective method of covering the range between 135mm and 400mm.

congrats on the new lens.

I'm torn between either the 300 F4 and the 400 F5.6, I've done tons of reading on this sites and other about the both of them. How would you compare the sharpness, image quality, and focus speed of both of them? Also when shooting with the 400 would you get any bokeh at 5.6?

I would say 50% of the photos on my NY Jets American Football Training Camp site were taken with a Canon TC 1.4 II (link in signature) - anyway the funny thing is that when you remove the TC from the 300mm F4 it's a really lite setup

The 300/4 is a wonderful lens, as your images show. If not for my lust for fast glass, I'd still have mine. The close-focusing ability is a bonus for getting shots like your butterfly image.

Magnificent lens! A keeper for sure and you won't regret it.

Try it at f/4.5, that's when it becomes ULTRA sharp instead of just normal nice and sharp :D

Awesome lens. Awesome shots. Enjoy! Mine seems to live on f/8..........f/16 for close ups. She definately likes to be stopped down a bit. The 300/4 has been my number 1 lens this summer for just about everything.
