Ok for everyone who has helped me so far thank you. I am picking up extension tubes tmrw from my local store, a 17-40 is on back order for me, and i am ordering the 70-200 F4L next week.
But i have decided i also need a fast wide angle prime, i considered the 35mm, but i am a little concerned about the build quality, i am very impressed with my 50mm, however it is a little to long on a crop body for anyinternal shots. I definetly need a second prime, and i cannot afford a fast wide angle zoom at the moment.

The 35mm is still in the running, but i have now seen the 28mm, however which version do i buy? Is there much difference in performance? Obviously there is a difference in build quality, i can look at test images until the cows come home but i would rather hear people first hand experiences.

As always your full frank and honest opinions are most welcome.
Thanks again, A.

The biuld isn't that good on either one of them. the 35 has the same build as the 28/2.8

The USM 1.8 is kinda plasticky too.

Have you considered manual focus lenses? I've picked up a 35mm prime for 20 bucks and a focusing screen to use it with. Should be good, but it's still en route.

Sigma offers 20, 24, and 28 f/1.8 primes. No HSM though.

If you are planning to buy a 28mm EF lens, then the f/1.8 is by far the best. however the f/2.8 is OK.

Check these reviews from the digital picture:

Canon EF 28mm f/1.8 USM (external link) and then Canon EF 28mm f/2.8 (external link)

Of the two the faster lens is much better reviewed but of course costs more.

Personally if looking to replace the 'standard 50mm' view of a crop camera, my personal choice is for the sigma 30mm f/1.4 EX DC HSM

Have a look at this thread and poll I started a few weeks ago when having pretty much the same questions you ask now.

Canon 6D
Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 , Canon EF 85mm f/1.8 Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 macro
CanonEF 17-40 f/4 L Canon EF 24-70 f/4 IS L and 70-200 f/4 L :D
Speedlite 580EX and some bags'n pods'n stuff

i think i will stick to canon primes, there is little saving in the pricing, and i believe canon make more reliable lenses, i have seen so many threads with people suffering poor examples/copies of tamron and sigma lenses.

There's always the Sigma 30mm f/1.4, which gets excellent reviews.

Exactly what Ed said....

The EF 28 f1.8 USM is a great little lens! Like any other lens, you have to learn how to use it and get used to its tendencies.

28 1.8 is outstanding. Build quality is very decent and I'm speaking from the perspective of someone who loves the rock solid L build quality, too. Plasticky is hardly the word unless you're comparing it to something like the big Ls with full metal casings. Even the smaller Ls are plastic. 17-40, 24-105. 24-70 inner barrel is metal but housing is plastic.

Here's a test of 13 lenses fitting Canon and covering 28mm:

http://www.shiftlenses.com …tion/OwnWebPage.php?Id=17 (external link)

Predictably the new Leica runs away with the top honours, and for the price you'd be disappointed if it didn't. Not so predictable perhaps is the excellent overall performance of the Tamron 28-75 at a much more accessible price.
