Well as a fellow Sarfender I thought I ought to offer some help... trouble is, I only got my DSLR in April and I'm still in the UK, so no snow to practice on for a few months yet...

The big problem is that because snow is so bright, you need to worry about exposure. The snow will fool the camera and you'll end up with everything under-exposed. Personally, I think you can get away with it if you're shooting mountain scenery: under-exposure means more colour saturation and it can look quite dramatic. But if you're shooting people then you need to worry about it a bit more.

I'd suggest:

  • take spot or partial meter readings from your hand as a quick proxy for "correct" exposure
  • check the histograms all the time
  • make sure you know how to dial in exposure compensation
  • remember that bown highlights can't be recovered by underexposure can
  • use a polariser to cut down the glare from the snow.
And have fun!
