Hello all, I am new and have been reading this board for hours everyday....

Eventually I am going to get the Canon 70-200 f2.8L but since this is a little heavy I wanted a secondary lens for more casual shooting and to bring around everyday.

I have been looking at the Sigma 55-200mm F4-5.6 DC

As well as the 70-300mm F4-5.6 APO DG MACRO
http://www.sigmaphoto.com/lenses/lenses_all_details.asp?id=3303&navigator=3 (external link)

I currently own a Sigma 18-50mm which I like very much.

What are your thoughts?
What else is in this range in cost and quality?

I love shooting cycling and sports but my daughter and back yard bbqs come a close second.

Thanks in advance
Larry

The 70-300 is a very popular lens, much more than the 50-200 from Sigma.
If it was me, I'd go with the 70-300 as it can work with film and FF cameras and the extra reach is nicer than having the 50-70mm range.

In the UK, the new 50-150/2.8 is available on pre-order for around 75% the cost of the 70-200/2.8. No-one knows yet how good it will be, of course.

It would be much more expensive as it's a pro grade lens. In the US, the 70-300 goes for about $200, I'd expect the 50-150 to be about $500 or more.
