Here's sharing some recent captures with the hand held 20D + 500 f4 IS + Canon 1.4x TC, all using manual exposure. This combo is by no means light, but I find it quite hand holdable for short periods of time....:D

1. Barred Buttonquail, 1/640 sec, f/7.1, ISO 400

2. Bright-capped Cisticola, 1/320 sec, f/5.6, ISO 400

3. Lesser Coucal, 1/500 sec, f/7.1, ISO 200

Wow awesome shots Romy! Handheld 700mm?! Even more impressive! :)

All three of these are beautiful birds and I don't recall having seen any of them before so thanks for sharing!

Excellent - as ever. I love the reed in #2 and the pose of the bird.

How are the biceps though? ;)

Thanks, Nick and Damian.

I use my beer belly to support the elbow during hand holding...

Great captures Romy. Went to a local shop the other day and held the 500 for the first time, maybe if have a beer belly I can handhold it. but for me, tripod is a sure must.
