Ok i promise this is the last thread i will make asking for advice on a lens before making my next purchase. The next thread will be me jumping around that i have a new lens, or crying that it broke being shipped.

Anyway the EFS10-22, i am growing to this lens, mainly because i have found it with a £200 saving on uk price. I will at some stage get the 17-40 mainly because its a cheap walk around lens. I would find use for an ultra wide angle lens i like taking pics of old buildings and i work in a world heritage city so there is no shortage of impressive subjects.
I would like to hear from owners of the 10-22 especially those who own both, i know you exist i have seen your signatures.
Any help and test images would be most apprecitated, many thanks again people, A.

The Canon 10-22 is considered by many to be a superlative lens...would be an 'L' except for the EF-S coverage. Even Ken Rockwell, the confirmed Nikon fan who publishes many analyses and tests, says he would even buy a Canon body just to be able to use this lens, which outperforms the Nikon, Sigma, and (I forget) in the 10/12 to 20/24 range! A friend of mine has been a 4x5 fanatic for probably 50 years(!) and even HE swears by the lens!

One stop digital, and i am comparing it to jessops who rip us off by charging full RRP, and then have the cheek to say that it is in the sale.

The 10-22 is a superb lense. L glass quality. Razor sharp.
I'd take this over the 17-40 any day.

Former 10-22 owner who misses his lens - do I count? :)

On a crop body the 10-22 is outrageously wide. Magnificent angle of view and a totally sweet lens. The 17-40 is nice as well but functions more as a standard zoom. Note I did not buy my 17-40 for a crop camera, but rather to function as a UW on full frame. So for you, there is a reason to have both, they will complement each other nicely.

For absolute maximum quality, stop the 10-22 down to f/8 to get sharp corner-to-corner images. It's useable wide open but when I shoot landscapes with it (my main use), I need both the DOF and the quality.

Go for it and never look back. Betcha next post will be "I can't bring myself to sell it!" :D

Im pretty sold, just waiting for an email telling me its in stock now, and i am ordering it. Thanks for the tip on its sweet spot f8 seems slow but anything does compared to the 501.4, i am sure this lens will educate me in a new area of photography.
I have just seen a second hand price in a magazine thats £100 more than the new price i am paying for this lens, can hardly wait. I saw it in town yesterday i thought it would be small for some reason, but its a hefty beast, value for money me thinks.
Good to know that canon put quality glass and R&D into lenses that dont carry the red strip!
Thanks again A.

it is a solid and good lens. I change from sigma 12-24 to 10-20 and now EF-S 10-20. The lightest too. Just love it.

I own both the 17-40 and the 10-22 and consider them entirely different yet equal in quality. I would not consider selling either of them. Be prepared for some pretty strange stuff with the 10-22. There is a real learning curve with this lens insofar as avoiding perspective distortion. As far as sharp focus and using f8 I would like to add the following. The 10-22 because of its extreme wide angle tends to focus all over the place. By using center point focusing with this lens and placing the point on the area of most importance and then recomposing you will find that you can get extremely sharp results at any aperture with this lens

for the test report... as for the sweet spot...depends upon your criteria. f/5.6 carries the highest resolution MTF at the center, although edge performance is better at f/8, and vignetting is lowest.
