I am getting vertical lines in my photos and movies. The problem is worse with bright scenes. The memory card is definately not the problem, tried several others same problem. See attached image. Save the image and zoom it to get a good look at the problem. I sent the camera to Canon for repair. I just got it back after 2 weeks and $97.00. Still have the same problem. They replaced the LCD pcb assembly. They obviously paid no attention to my comments or tested the camera thoroughly. My feeling is the CCD is the problem???

Did you send them example prints with the camera? The more documentation you provide them of specifically what you're sending it in for, the more likely they are to find what you're seeing, not something else that may be going wrong. Sort of like (in the extreme) telling your mechanic "my car makes a funny noise", and he replaces the blown muffler not the squealing brakes. Send it back, with a sample pic. and letter of explanation - they should have fixed it; see if they can second time round.

The camera was sent in with complete details of the problem. I also left images and movies on the memory card so they could see the problem. Obviously the tech mistakenly thought the problem was only visible when viewing on the LCD display. Even so, after replacing the display they should of reviewed the images again and seen the problem is still there. Simple troubleshooting 101. I'm leaving on a 2 week vacation this weekend and was planning on having this camera working correctly.

I am sending Canon an email and will try calling them on Tuesday. Hopefully, they do the right thing to correct this issue.

Update:

I sent the camera back to Canon. Just received it back yesterday. The first picture I shot had the same problem as shown above. This time the repair slip states they adjusted the flash popup sensor. Give me a break. This company has a serious issue with their service department. I was thinking about upgrading to an S3IS, not anymore. I will never do business with this company againvmad

I am sorry, but this made me laugh..!
And after laughing for a moment i realised that i have to put canon's service to the test also very soon because my s3is is broken.
And there are also vertical lines in my images. Let's see if they change just the batteries etc. Hope not!

Hopefully you get your camera working! Just send it back to Canon.. once again..!

Updtate:

Just received the camera back from it's 3rd trip to the Canon factory repair facility. Again, the first picture I shot had the same problemvmad This time the repair slip states they replaced the main PCB assembly. Ok, I think the CCD is all that's left at this point.

It is most probably a CCD problem. It looks like the CCD is shifting pixels.

Update:

Kudos to Canon, they replaced my S1IS with a refurbished S3IS:D My total cost for this saga was the initial $97.00 repair fee.

I doubt that you should have even been charged the $97. Check the sticky for this forum titled ''Service Notice for Canon PowerShot models'. My son's girlfriend had her S230 replaced with a SD400 refurb at no charge. They had a large batch of faulty CCDs.

The problem OP was seeing doesn't fit what Canon described in the service notice ("If this occurs, the signal is not output from the CCD normally in Shooting Mode, which may cause a distorted image or the absence of an image.").
