Just got my 70-200 f4 today and it is a beauty. Took it to soccer practice and shot some nice kid kicks. It's light and oh so fast. Not noisy at all.

Hey Suzie, how would you compare the focus noise to the 24-70.
my 24-70 you really have to strain to hear it, but the 70-200 sounds like the IS on my 75-300

I've only taken about 20 shots on it today trying to drive kids around for soccer. It didn't sound very loud at all, very quiet. All my lenses are quiet, come to think of it. I couldn't even tell today it was focusing. Love it already. I'm going to try to take pictures of the moon tonight with the bulb setting. Fun stuff. :)

There's no focusing noise with any of the 70-200's. If you listen in a quiet room, you can hear a slight "whoosh" (but still very quiet) of the friction between the parts, but the motor makes no noise. On the IS version, you hear a very very faint "click" when the IS activates and deactivates, and a bit of a hum while it's in operation, but no noise anyone else can hear.

Yes, when it reaches its mfd or infinity, you hear it, but it's not really a sound you hear, merely the lack of sound. A few have a bit of a clunk at the end of the focus scale.

i could hear mine in the front room with the tv going. i was turning around in all different directions locking focus on different objects. which it did well on. no hunting at all,and i could hear it everytime.it doesnt sound like it is destroying itself, and it focuses smoothly also.i will just have to keep an eye on it before the warranty is about to expire. and for comparative purposes. i would say it is about 10 times louder than my 24 -70

Thanks for this!

Would it be good to buy a UV Haze filter from B&W for protecting the glass? I use UV filters, but am wondering if the filters damage the image quality of the lens...

I won't use UV filters anymore unless absolutely neccessary.

UV filter on 400 f/5.6L:

Note weird bokeh:

w/o the filter the lens produced much sharper, more saturated images - I wish I had both of those sans filter to show ya, but didn't figure it out until after I'd left those situations.

70-200 4L is a silent USM lens! When it makes noise it wil prob be because of a failure in the mechanics!

Hehe.

It's Canon alright...

But still, the focus is the loudest and hardest I've ever heard, it's even louder than my ex-70-300 non-DO IS focusing while going out and in... Confuuuusing!

Bluej511. I know exactly how the 1.2M and 3M switches work, that's not a problem. I'm just talking about that when I'm for example 3 meters away and the lens is at 2.5 meters, it's loud focusing until it locks...

Not loud! It's very nice and it was quiet enough not to wake up my whole family at 4 this morning when I shot the moon from my bathroom window. The shots were fuzzy only because of the polution and window and screen that was in the way. :( So, I'm posting my son at his soccer practice. Shot at 200mm, cropped 50% with USM and a little PS.
