I can't imagine it being loud since it has USM (I've yet to use one of the 70-200's). I have USM on my 17-40 (dead silent) and 100 Macro (the elements make a faint bit of noise) but I can't fathom how anyone could describe a USM lens as LOUD. When I think loud I think of my thrifty fifty (sounds like a can of bees) or my Sigma 70-300(like grinding drills).

I just took the lens out of my bag (hadn't done it since yesterday :-P) and put it on my camera. I just noticed that the sound is normal, as how can elements in the front move and make a dead-silent noise like from my friend's 17-40L?!

It is fine, and the test shots looked good, I'm going to submit some 100% crops just in few minutes.

Regards,
Aero145

Glad to hear that it's fine Aero. I'm looking forward to buying myself a copy of this lens soon, get those crops up! Also, just put up some real world photos, I'm not so much into the crops and pixel peeping.

Here are the 100% crops. One real-world picture, other all 100% crops of some static things inside my house.

This is the image "editing":

Open in PS, convert from RAW to JPEG, change bits from 16 to 8, and change colour profile to Adobe sRGB.

Nothing else.

If USM is silent, then how come my old 75-300mm USM is not silent?

Ring USM is near silent. The operator of the camera will be able to hear a slight hum or whoosh in most cases, but nothing more. Try a 35 f/2 or a Sigma 20 1.8. That's what a normal lens sounds like.

Hey!

The lens is just very nice!

But something makes me very "???" in the face. The code of the lens is "UT1011" !!!

It was manufactured in 2005! And in October! And it's being sold 11 months after construction... Very strange...

Local shop?

Local places just don't move lenses like B&H does.

Could you say this again, so a person which doesn't talk English as his 1st language can understand?

Yeah. Mine is absolutely silent, meaning no engine noise.
It certainly "whooshes" though it never "hummed".

Cheers,
Jaime

Very little Photoshop except converting to JPEG and resize.

Most local camera stores don't sell nearly as many lenses, especially expensive ones, as online stores or big chain stores like B&H do. I wouldn't worry about getting a slightly older lens from a local shop..it's just been sitting in their stockroom for a while.
