I'm headed to New York in a week and can't wait to photograph the city. I plan on taking my small tripod. Can someone give me some tips and pointers on how to get great night shots?

Also, I always take the ferry from Southstreet Seaport to Staton Island - you get an awesome view of the city and the statute of liberty...so how to photograph this? The ferry will be moving (slow)... Again, this is for at night...how to accomplish this?

Thanks so much for the help!

First question, use tripod, self timer, and low ISO. 2nd question, try it and see - make sure you zoom in on the picture with your LCD to check for sharpness. Higher ISO might be required.

For great night pictures, think composition and then depending on low-light levels think exposure.
They are even more important than sharpness. Then ofcourse use the tripod as muchas possible, even on the boat.
If possible take the ferry when natural light is still levelled with artificial, your pics will have much more impact.

Absolutely. About half an hour after sunset is usually best. There are some samples to illustrate what impact the time has in this thread: Night shots with the XT. You might also find this sunrise/sunset/twilight calculator (external link) handy.
