Great capture of this hummer at rest. I've been able to capture a couple shots when they were not at the feeder but nothing like these. Good job.

Wow, great shots! How'd you ever find this little gal, anyway? They're so small and hard to see. Good job! :)

Hi Gary,
love the story  , # 2 great photo, sharp and nice BG (the light patch a little distracting but dosent take away from the shot in any way) nice comp.

[QUOTE=Gary Fairhead] These shots were taken last week on two seperate days. The first was with a 36 mm Kenko extension tube and the second with a 20 mm extension tube on the 400 F5.6.
# 1 IMHO is not as sharp as # 2 do you think it is the different extension tubes or your shooting conditions?
Regards,
Clare

Wow, very well done. Interesting, we have had hummers resting on our tomato cages, too. It is about 20ft. from a sweat pea they like to feed on. We don't see too many here in the plains. Just a few on their way back south leaving the high mountains.

Thanks for looking and commenting to everyone who took the time......very much appreciated:D

Dan.......I was about 10 feet from her. Skitish but also approachable if you are already in her space when she arrives or if you approach in slow motion.

Fee.....I think I have you to thank for suggesting the extension tubes ....THANKS:D

Keith......she would hover in the floweres for some time and then rocket into the treetops but sometimes she would settle on a nearby perch as in these shots. Very slow approach seemed to work ...love them when they let you get this close:D

Clare....thats a leaf in the BG in the first. A Service Berry tree leaf I believe ( Humming Bird Moths actally require this type of tree for survival I am told)

Good question on the 20mm vs 36mm extension tube DOF...not sure but that does make sense. The shots were both taken in similar conditions with similar light although 1 is at 1/800 sec and the other at 1/1600 sec...both at F5.6. Another factor may be the position of the bird. A profile is always easier to get fully focused vs a head on shot but.......... Here are 2 more shots with one being a profile and the other head on.or head up:D ..both within a minute or so...note that I cloned/patched out a support wire as it was way too distracting

Thanks again Tony and also thanks to Joe and Tommy for taking the time to comment.....I absolutely agree with you Tommy. The BG in the first is very clean and would be a nice match for the second shot. Here is one more. A slightly different pose with the leaf in the BG cloned and patched out. I might try this on the 2nd shot as it does not take that long and does make for a cleaner image.
