RIP Steve, I hope I'm lucky enough to pass on doing something I love. It's kind of ironic that the man who faces crocodiles frequently gets killed by a stingray whilst filming for a shark documentary. There have only been 3 stingray related deaths in Australia ever, I wouldn't consider it a dangerous animal or a case of lack of respect, this was a freak accident.

I often watched his shows on TV, what a sad loss for a talented man.

Would you look at that!?!?

Very sad news to wake up to. Steve was one of the most charismatic, knowledgable, and sympathetic wildlife presenters/conservations I've ever seen.

From what I read, the incident was a one-in-a-million fluke and to my mind had absolutely nothing to do with his confrontational presenting style. I heard this morning that there's only been 3 recorded cases of fatalies from stingray stings - complete fluke that the barb hit his heart.

Using his programs, with all their theatricality played a key role in publicising the work that Australia Zoo does, and I'm sure that it will continue to do so.

Respect.

Very, very sad news. We used to watch his wildlife programmes regularly. He was a thorough professional, who loved what he did. He had a rare talent that will be missed by many. I hate snakes, but he made me aware of their importance to our ecosystem. I understand that he was never bitten by a venomous snake - hardly a sign of someone who treats wildlife with a lack of respect.
Our sympathy goes out to his family.

How terribly sad! I'm sure everyone will miss Steve's crazy antics. That man just didn't know what fear was.

What a lot of people may not know was, that he also established animal shelters for injured koalas and other native wildlife. He always tried to show the beauty and vulnerability of our so-called "killer" creatures and how much they were misuderstood.

RIP.

I met Steve about 10 years ago, had lunch with him at a friends BBQ, he was such a character even back then, i honestly thought mum was joking when she rang me telling me, totally shocked, a true australian and world conservationalist lost at such a young age.

RIP Steve and all the best to his wife, bindi and their new born.

Such sad news, for us nature/animal loving people. He did great stuff bringing into light endangered species and bringing the global awareness from his close viewing angle.

Crikey.

shame, we certainly will miss his comedic, informative TV shows. I hope his family is hanging in there. He has a wife and 2 children. So sad.

Very sad news. My son was crying this morning about Steve Irwin's death. A big loss for all of his fans - but a terrible thing for his wife and two young kids.

So sad. He was a real character, but even more so an educator and a true lover of nature and animals. The world has lost a real hero in the conservation world. He will be missed.

WOW, every once in a while life smacks you upside your head. Steve Irwin’s death was the first story I read when I woke up this morning. At first I thought it a joke and as I shared the story with my wife, I too thought it was bound to happen. Like an earlier poster said, “if you play with fire”. But then came the SMACK… As I read our local paper I saw the obituary for my former soccer coach. We had coached together for several years and while reading his obit, I didn’t think he had asked for it though he ate way too much, drank on occasion, and loved his cigars. Steve died doing what he loved to do, coach died doing what he loved to do. We are all playing with fire and we all one day will get burned. So I intend to go out each day, and take pictures all along the way, as if it were my last day because you never know when you will get burned.

R.I.P. Steve and coach Stoval

Wow I just got all teary eyed. I hope that his death doesnt mean his shows wont be on anymore. I found them so informational and great! He is a daredevil and he didnt deserve what he got... He is only trying to inform us all of whats out there. As quoted on cnn.com, he is thought of as being invincible...

This is sad. My heart and prayers go out to him and his family.

Thanks for all the info and great times Steve! I cant even begin to count the hours I have spent watching you be you... Truly unbelievable!

It is very sad that he passed away, no one deserves that. While I respect what he did for conservation as a whole, I did not agree with his provoking of otherwise peaceful wildlife for the purposes of his TV show.
That said, still very sad and I feel for his family.
