Hi y'all

I'm newish here, been mostly lurking for a month or so since i found you... recently took a vacation and had a wild hair idea to create a calendar from some of the images... i've gotten a few really nice comments from customers about the photographs, but then i thought i'd come here and ask some photogs what y'all thought (you know, real photogs as opposed to friends/family etc.).

I actually hadn't gotten all the way thru the 1800+ images i shot on the trip, but we were under a date deadline so i'm not totally happy with all the shots i picked.

you can see all of the images in the calendar preview on the site here:

Here's a couple of images without the calendar motif

Judging by the first two images shown Mitch, I think you are going to have an excellent calendar.
I hope it is a big sized calendar so as to show your images of beautifully.
Well done.

I like all the images you have chosen except for November. November just doesn't give me that sense of tranquility that the rest of the images do because of the speed boat in the background ( too much noise ).IMHO

I really like the July picture, but August is my favorite out of the bunch. Nice work!

That's some interesting feedback - hadn't thought of that aspect and you're right. My intention was to show in one photo some of the things that can be done on the beach, but maybe you're right in that it doesn't fit in with the others. Good catch. Thanks!

Obviously the pictures are a bit small to judge the IQ,but they look pretty good.

Thanks to all for your comments.

Anyone know a great place to sell calendars?

Someone has suggested I get an agent (obviously i've not thought of that before)... would that be a good idea as well?

I don't know much about marketing calendars, but I would guess that its a risky thing since they are dated. I was going to suggest maybe a local tourist shop might want to sell them, but after the middle of January, calendars just don't sell much.

Thanks Becca - i agree, risky - which is why i'm hoping for some help :)

I have gotten one shop to purchase a small number to test the market, but living hundreds of miles away this is kinda difficult. I'm guessing that is why there are agents (which i know nothing about and was hoping some of you would know).

I thought I'd post a follow up (just in case anyone cares :)

I went thru a lot of discussion with the folks at the printer that i picked online (maybe this would have been much easier if i'd looked for someone locally!) and we finally decided to run the calendar (only 75 copies because I don't know how many i can actually sell) - anyway, they came in last week and 4-5 images had lots of blotchiness (my technical term)... i was mortified. I called them and the manager looked at a couple of the images in photoshop and instantly went to the red channel - he said the problem was very obvious right there - well i'd never done that before but indeed he was right.

Here's what i found out... look at the 3rd image here:

IMAGE NOT FOUND
HTTP response: 503

To make a long story short, it turns out there was a bug in Aperture when exporting to sRBG - the red channel got some muck in it. When exporting to just RBG, there wasn't a problem.

The folks at the printer (PrintPelican) (external link) have been very gratious and since they had previously looked at the images and had told me they'd be ok, they're reprinting the calendar at no cost to me. So, soon I hope to have the final copy.

By the way, at this point, I've sold 24 to a small shop down on Sanibel and I've sold 12 copies online thru my own website. I might actually break even! :)

By the way, I took your advice and removed this image from the calendar... I replaced it with the image from the cover (which is mucho better anyway).

Thanks for the feedback!

Good luck with your calendar Mitch. The photos and their overall mood seem ideal.

They are all wonderful shots, but I agree about the November one - it would be so much better without the boat.
