I'm now doing some photography for my school and it's newspaper so I've rationalized the purchase of a 10-22mm ;) I'd like to get the hood and filters at the time of purchase and I'd like to get this done asap so I need some help. I don't want to skimp on the filters but I don't need THE best.

I definitely want a CP but I was wondering if the slim version is absolutely necessary on the 10-22mm ? I was considering the B+W Kasemann slim CP MRC filter. What do you think? Any others I should consider?

I also want some sort of ND filter but don't know if I should get a grad or not. Any recommendations here (brand, and what degree of density would be good all around)? Does this need to be a slim version?

and finally, a UV/protective filter. I'm still on the fence about this. There's so much controversy as to how much they affect image quality. But if I did get one, I was thinking maybe Hoya's S-HMC UV filter... Slim needed? Could I get away w/something cheaper?

oh yea, one more thing, I've never used a hood before. How exactly does Canon's EW-83E hood mount. Does it go before or after the filter? If I were to use the slim CP filter (do all slim filters lack front threads?) could I still use the hood?

Sorry for all the questions, I tried searching... TIA

If you don't use slim filters, there will be dark corners when you use 10mm. Slim filters may not have threads on the front = you cannot use more than one at once. And, you wouldn't want to. Yes, get the hood. It will not affect filter use and is a good idea. I'd wait on gettng any filters until you have used the lens for a while. Ultrawide lenses are tricky. CP may not give you the results you want and is expensive.

At what point do you need a slim circ-pol? Would I need one at 17mm on a 17-55mm (efs)?

I didn't with my 17-40L but not 100% sure on the EF-S, wouldn't think so though.

For the OP'er _ I don't think the B+W has front threads (requires a push on cap) so you can rule out using your Canon lens cap on the filter. The Hoya Pro1 Digital and Super Pro1 HMC do have front threads on the filter so the lens cap attaches just fine.

They say on all wide angle lenses. In my opinion that would be anything shorter than a 40mm which is considered a normal focal length.

To the OP, I would skip getting the UV filter. I used to buy them but I took them off an no longer see a need. Especially on the wide angles which are more sensitive to light fall off and soft edges.

I'd use slim on anything wider than 24 mm for full frame and 17 mm for EF-S ... so for the 10-22 I'd get a slim one.

It seems that the 10-22 EFS requires a slim CP to avoid vignetting while the 10-20 EX can take a normal CP filter w/o vignetting. The latter I know via first-hand, the former via examples and word of mouth online. Toney, can you confirm this?

I'm torn as to which CP to get:

Hoya 77mm Extra Thin Circular Polarizer Super Multi Coated Glass Filter $172

B + W 77mm Wide Angle Circular Polarizer Multi Coated Thin Glass Filter $165

Sigma 77mm EX DG, Digitally Optimised, Circular Polarizer Wide Angle Multi-Coated Glass Filter. $140

B+W also has: B + W 77mm Circular Polarizer Wide Angle Slim Mount Coated Glass Filter for $109 but it isn't MULTI coated. Is the multi worth the $60? My guess is yes.

Also, does anyone have any comments on the ND filters? I think I'll hold off on the UV for now, this order is getting to be quite pricey, especially on a college student budget... The hood will offer some protection.

This is an interesting topic, because I've often heard people say that the EF-S 10-22 requires a slim filter, but I haven't found that myself at all.

Before I upgraded to a 5D, I used my 20D and 10-22 regularly with a standard thickness B+W MRC circular polariser (f-pro mount, the newer version), and didn't see any vignetting at all. Not once.

Here's an example at 10mm, totally uncropped:

No vignetting there.

The only thing I can think of is that I almost always used that combination at f8 or f11, and perhaps it's only an issue when using a larger aperture. No idea, and unfortunately I don't have the lens or the body anymore to try it out.

Mat that probably holds true using the smaller aperture and I remember that shot, one of my favorites posted at POTN.

I think it's more to do with different brands of slim filters. I have read that the Hoya slim CP results in vignetting on the 10-22/1.6x combo while the Hoya slim UV HMC doesn't. And of course your results with B+W - did you get a chance to check it with a B+W UV MRC slim?

JDubya - As for which filter, my personal choice is for B+W. They've worked well in the past for me and I can trust their quality and lasting build. And yes MRC is worth the extra to avoid any flare.

7D and lenses.

I can guarantee you the Hoya Pro1 Digital (slim type) doesn't vignette on the 10-22 and Canon 30D.
