Best in the UK are 7dayshop (gurnsey) and some place in York (whose name I forget).

Looking on the 7dayshop site now I see the following:

CompactFlash (CF) Memory Card - 4GB - £51.99

CompactFlash (CF) Memory Card - 4GB - Sandisk- £84.99

CompactFlash (CF) Memory Card - 4GB - Sandisk Extreme III - £134.99

Of course, this is double the price you'd pay in the US but even so...

Incidentally they're selling 1GB for £11.49.

I'm on a memory card embargo until I really need extra memory. It's just money out for something that'll be cheaper fairly soon. I went for a Hyperdrive HD80 with the 40GB disk. Having said that, I might go for some 8GB cards when they drop to about $30 apiece. The 40GB unit might well end up as a laptop backup drive.

$70. That's not bad at all. Even given postage that's almost ready to slip under the fifty pounds barrier for import to the UK by post without getting Customs and Extortion all excited. I've dealt with NewEgg. My last 1GB CF card came from them for $30 about 4 months ago.

looks like they are no longer advertising the rebates that go with the pricing. Still an decent deal, but the 30 and 40 off really helped. Maybe look around for the rebates to see if they are still valid

Two weeks later there'll be another deal for less. I don't get so excited about price reductions any more.

sometimes, sometimes not. I paid $450 for a 4gb extremeIII a year ago march, so for it to be 1.3 the price now is simply amazing. You could be bitter than you paid that much, or you can take my advice that it just means you get to buy 3x as much now for the same price.

If you need memory, I wouldn't wait, you never know when the next deal is, and there are so many shady dealers and scams on memory cards these days its just not worth trying to save a buck other than a sale.

I bought a Hyperdrive so that I wouldn't need more memory cards.

I bought my first 1GB card for $110 in 2005. I bought my second a few months ago for $30.

I don't feel like being stung for big cards unless I really utterly need them so I probably won't buy a 4GB until they're about $30 apiece.

Let's look at Summer 2003. Back then I was paying around £30 for a single 128mb card. Now I see a single 128mb card is going for £6. That's a drop of 80% in just 3 years. I can remember when Dixons was selling 64mb cards for £80 (Dixons was expensive anyway hence I never bought anything there). That was only a little over 4 years ago.

So... by that kind of reduction a $450 memory card in 2008 should cost less than $90. The fact that memory chips are in oversupply at the moment does of course mean that it could well be a lot less than that.

My recommendation is not to buy memory cards until you really have to. Heck, even my wedding photographer used a microdrive rather than a memory card - purely because of the cost.

then why even click on the thread?

microdrives are over priceed and will fail, so anyone still using them becuase of cost doesn't kow what they are doing.

If you don't like big memory cards, then don't get them. Manyo f us need them, in addition to portable storag devices and laptops.

During a wedding or a long shoot, its not uncommon for me to go through 10-15gbs, and theres no way that I'm going to be switching out 1bg cards all day long, and there not enough time to download and reuse, plus the fact that there is huge opportunities to lose images that way.

If you don't like the product or price, then just don't click on the thread

I pointed out in my contribution that memory card prices are always falling. I also indicated how much and how rapidly they have fallen with an indication of how much further they were likely to fall and the rate at which they were likely to fall. I also pointed out that unless you have a real and urgent need that cannot be circumvented then there's no point in buying more just because they're cheaper. Memory cards will always fall in price. I buy them when I must. I don't buy on price alone.

While it is useful to know that Frys does them cheaper at the moment, I am not greatly excited as I don't have an urgent need. In about 9 months I will need bigger memory cards as I have an event coming up that demands them. Until then I shall wait while they fall to an even lower price.

Memory cards aren't like bananas. They don't have a sale when there's a glut and then raise the price when the glut has ended. Memory cards are always going to decline in price even though there's a slight seasonal flavour to the reductions. As such there is no point in getting excited about a low price that's only low as long as it's current. In 6 months it'll be an expensive or mediocre price.

There's a term - just in time ordering - which applies to electronics perfectly. Buy when you need and don't buy until you need. If you have an urgent and pressing need then buy. If you don't then there's no point in spending $140 on something you don't utterly need. Instead it's better to wait until you utterly need it and then buy at the lower (current) price at the time.

sorry, I guess I should have password protected the thread and only accepted people that HAVE to HAVE cards this instant to be able to view it. Why would I ever think that anyone else might not benefit from being able to buy more memory or find out what the going sale price at a reputible dealer is.
