I use the Canon RAW Image converter but I lose the info about the shooting specs (e.g. shutter speed, aperture, etc.) Is there a converter that would let me retain the info about how the photo was shot?

Breezebrowser is able to export the EXIF information in a text file, which works just fine for me.

So Todd and Babinski

If you are just posting on the web at say 8" x 10" is there much advantage to shooting the original RAW ?

I have yet to shoot a RAW shot. I am still getting "hugh" physical sizes that seem to hold up when resized to 8 x 10.

Well, first of all you can't shoot on the web at 8x10. There are no inch measurements for web photos -- only pixel dimensions. A photo may be 8x10 on a 15 inch monitor, but it will be quite a bit larger on a 21 inch monitor.

Having said that, yes I have found that RAW gives better results for printed photos than does JPG. Is the difference substantial? No. But I paid good money for my camera so why would I shoot in a mode that is anything short of the absolute best quality that it can produce?

Ofoto asks that all digital photos are submitted in jpeg, are you saying that you find that converting from RAW>TIFF>JPEG gets better photographs than just shooting in JPEG? I've been shootin raw, but I find it kinda annoying to convert twice then post and view and get prints ...

If you are always 100% satisfied with the way the pics come out of the camera, then there is little point in shooting raw. I like to tweak things and that is where raw makes a difference.

The newest BreezeBrowser has a lot of post-processing options when converting from RAW and you can save your final output in JPEG. It gives you the ability to do the tweaking without having to go through the TIFF stage. It can't do everything you can do in PhotoShop, but it's good enough for a large majority of what I shoot.

Is that a canon utility? Could you post the link to it, or point me at the website?

No, BreezeBrowser is shareware from http://www.breezesys.com/ (external link). I can't say enough about this program. It's worth much more than it's shareware fee, although you do have to get used to its way of doing things. You can get a free trial. The trial version is limited by the number of files per folder it can handle, but it never expires.

If you only want to have the EXIF info extracted to a separate txt-file you only need BreezeDownloader (same web page) which is freeware!
