steve, a workaround to solve the FP issue with the Sigma is to shoot TV at your desired shutter speed (presuming to be faster than the your camera's max sync speed) and check the histogram for exposure.

Canon's 420 EX has a "full-time" high speed sync model by flip of a switch. I don't under why the 500 DG Super, being a newer and more than comparable model, doesn't have such feature.

Does the 580 have the same switch/feature as the 420?

Jon.

yes, the 430, has it also, its more of a button than a switch ;)

will the 500 super DG act as a master to the 430ex in slave? or can only the 5xxEX models do that?

I don't own a 580 EX. But I would assume the high speed sync function on 580 EX is as good as, if not better than, the one on 420 EX.

I used to use my 500 DG Super to trigger my 420 EX with glitches (the total flash output seems to be somewhat irregular at times). I gave up after some trial and error. There were previous discussions on POTN about how unreliable it is to mix different brands of flashes in wireless operation. But if you don't mind going into full manual mode...

BTW, you are right about the button and switch thing. My bad.

you don't have to turn it off...just press the + button on the back to get FP enabled again.

I've never turned it on and off.

I've never turned it on and off.

But I find that even when doing this, the camera will not let me raise the shutter speed above its normal sync speed on both my 30D and 350D.

When I had my Sigma Super, I would simply work on my timing such that when I wanted to turn FP on, I hit the FP button at the exact same time as I rolled my shutter to a faster than sync speed. It worked every time. No need to turn it off and on all the time then. :)

I might have the dryer fixed! We'll see in a few days... I'm keeping my fingers crossed and chanting "I want a new flash. I want a new flash. I want..."
