It's interesting to read these comments, and even more so to see how many people are plugging the 70-200 f/4 !

It's a real gem of a lens, and many of us have been amazed by it. Can't say enough good things about it!

Most disappointed in the Macro lens simply because I'm lacking a decent tripod or macro flash (or bracket). I've gotten some good shots with it but the cheap tripod I use just doesn't work with all the weight. I don't get very good results using it hand held either, given the small apertures required to get decent shots. The MT-24EX is next on my list, though it'll be awhile before I get it.

Please give it another chance, macro photography is challenging but once you figure it out it is so rewarding. Most of us on the macro forum don't use a tripod or monopod and a regular, diffused flash (on a bracket) is all that is needed. Try shooting f11 @ 1/125sec :)

It's between the Sigma 30 f1.4 EX DC HSM and the Sigma 150 f2.8 EX DG HSM MACRO.

It would have to be my 85 f/1.8. Never ceases to amaze me.

Easily my 50 f/1.8 Mk II

Its often problematic getting focus with my 350D and its 7 AF points, focus is slow, build feels really cheap....

....but nothing worth within twice its price will match it in terms of clarity and sharpness.

Its the simplicity of it that gets me.

However, i'm sure when my Sigma 70-200 f/2.8 is purchased at the end of the year that things will change :P

Hmm, my EX 18-50 (even though I'm looking to sell it to fund a 24-105), and my 85mm f/1.8 - yes, these are the only two lenses I own, but they have both given me so much enjoyment, and my photography has grown so much since moving up from the kit lens, although, to be fair, being persuaded to get a secondhand EOS 300D was the start of it all, and I'm very grateful to my Nikon D70 wielding friend for persuading me to get a DSLR - it was the most worthwhile purchase I've made in many years.

For me it would have to be the 200 1.8 by a long shot. Nothing else in my bag even come close to the quality.

don't sell the 85.

the 24-105 is a great lens but the 85 smokes it for portraits. in fact the only lens i've used comparable to the 85 for portraits is the 70-200f4.

the 24-70L comes very close but the 85 has the edge there too.

This one made me laugh.

I've been following this thread with interest since my original post and am really suprised/pleased with the answers...I didn't know what everyone would say (hence the question) but it's been very interesting finding out what lens/especially WHY you like it. I didn't post mine in the beginning because I was thinking about it. I think the 17-40L really changed the way I photograph so that would be my answer...but the 24-105 is the one I use the most. (And the 100-400 is my new LOVE).

18-55 Still the most used one, because of the range.

28 for the film
