Without a doubt, the 400 f/2.8 IS. The performance is unsurpassed. It's worth every penny I paid for it.

On a side note - while I knew this lens would attract a lot of attention, I had no idea that it would be such a chick magnet. The ladies just love it. If I were a little younger and not so happily married...

There are some pictures that I took with this lens that everytime I see it, I was sooo glad I got it.

Same here.

That really is a tough a question. I like all of my lenses and they all get used allot. If I had to pick I would have to say the 300 f/2.8 L IS. My first love in photography is wildlife and this lens makes it a treat to go out with.

Very much the same here Sheldon..:)

While I like and use most of my lenses, the one that I use most and makes me happiest is the 24 -104 f/4L!

Only having three lenses, you would think this would be an easy decision. The 24-105 is a fantastic lens that lives on the camera most of the time, however the 70-200 surpassed my expectations and I couldn't live without it. I guess that mean the only lens that isnt up for top honours is the thrifty fifty...but I couldnt part with it either.

don't sell the 85.

the 24-105 is a great lens but the 85 smokes it for portraits. in fact the only lens i've used comparable to the 85 for portraits is the 70-200f4.

the 24-70L comes very close but the 85 has the edge there too.

I would never get rid of the 85 - it's such a good all round lens - for portraits it's wonderful, for indoor sports (not that I shoot them) it's good, for baby / child portraits, it's a killer, because you can get really tight in, without being too physically close, and the tiny DOF is really wonderful - only their eye(s) is in focus, and the rest just melts away. Ok, so the 85 has brought me the most joy, and it was a present from my wife :)

although an extra half stop on an 85mm - would be nice, and could reduce that teensy depth of field by some more as well ;)

Please give it another chance, macro photography is challenging but once you figure it out it is so rewarding. Most of us on the macro forum don't use a tripod or monopod and a regular, diffused flash (on a bracket) is all that is needed. Try shooting f11 @ 1/125sec :)

I definately haven't given up on it. It's just not as addicting as I thought it would be and that's probably because it's not as simple as compose, focus, shoot. I'll be going back to NYC for a few days and plan to stop by B&H this time (I did the day before leaving last time and they were closing early so I didn't get to check it out). While there I will probably inquire about a nice macro flash bracket and go that route until I can afford (or if I even decide on) the MT-24ex. Some of my favorite shots came from that lens I just got fed up with OOF long exposures caused by my crappy tripod.
