This Magpie landed on my 'Drive gate' today and I found it a challenge to expose properly with the whites and blacks and quite a dull day with light but persistent rain.
Looking at the image you would think, 'wow' what ISO was the camera setting at, must be very high, because there seems to be a lot of noise in the background. However the ISO is 400. It's actually rain that's pattering down and you can even see the rain in front of the magpie as it looks spotted in the blacks, however I love it's perfectly shaped bib.

Settings: Aperture 5.6 Av mode ISO 400. FL 400m and speed 1.640.

Very nice capture Tony. It's not an easy subject to meter but you did well. The catchlight in the eye really brings out the bird. Very good composition. The white railing probably won't work with other subject, but here it worked perfectly with the Magpie.
Nice work.

Come on Tony it's stuffed! You've got two of them on your drive gates I've seen them when I drove past! :D

Really great capture Tony - goes to show that you shouldn't put the camera away just because it is raining.

You exposed the whites on the Magpie very well Tony with visual detail under the bib, I like this shot, very natural looking.

I never thought about that Fee and looks like you are right about the white railing, notice though that the black tail is in the area of the white rail and white breast is raised enough from it.
Thanks Fee.
