Looking for a wide angle lens for my 30D.

Considering Sigma 10-20 or the Canon 10-22, there is about £200 difference in price.
I'm intrested to hear if the Sigma is as good as the Canon.

I am looking to take big landscape pictures and blow them up to A3 for framing, so quality is important to me.

I have no objection to paying for quality lens, but only if it produces the pictures.

thanks for looking.

I have the Sigma version and it is sharp edge to edge. There were reports of the lens being OOF on one side when the lens was first released. I have not had any issues. The Sigma version comes with a hood and case as well.

IMO the extra value of the sigma makes up for the loss of 2mm . Optically it is superb, and as Rhino said, the stories about quality control seem to have faded away - hopefully Sigma have fixed their gremlins now!

the Canon lens is really good, but is it worth the extra - i think not, but lens choice is not always rational and many of us here are addicted to Canon glass, pure and simple!

+1

And I've blown up to 13x19 prints and the pics look outstanding with just a little USM. Very sharp and excellent clarity and contrast right out of the cam!

Another fan of the Sigma.

However, as with most third party vs. Canon discussions, if you can afford the Canon, buy the Canon.

I have the Canon and love it! - I got my £70 off with the rebate coupon to 'soften' the blow a bit :-)
The Sigma was getting too many negative comments about being soft on one side for my liking, although I don't know if this was an isolated batch or just generaly bad quality control...

thankyou for some interesting replies.

My situation is that i can afford to buy the canon lens, but i am not blinded by brand loyalty and accept that there are some excellent 3rd party lens available. All my current lens are Canon but this wouldn't stop me buying the Sigma.
Nobody posted saying the Canon was optically better, which must say something. I assume that most people who have bought a wide angle lens will have looked at both of these lens at some point.
My only drawback to the Sigma would be if i were to get a so called 'bad copy', as other posters mentioned, yes, i can take it back and exchange it - but who wants all the hassle. Nobody posted saying the Canon had any problems.
I can buy a Sigma for £289 off the shelf, the best price i found for the Canon is £479. Then there are the vouchers to take into account as well, so the Canon would be £409.
I'm still thinking Canon is the better bet, anyone have anything to add.
I am looking to purchase on Saturday.

Dud copies happen. But if a dud copy happens with a Canon, it's "user error", if a dud copy happens with a 3rd party manufacturer, it's manufacturer error.
An excellent side by side review of the Sigma vs the Canon is here.

Dud copies of Canon do happen. I have had one. IT was not user error. The lens had bad IS, would not MF (Switch was broke), and barrel wobbled. The lens was brand new and was replaced. No issues with the new one.

I have the Canon and I think it's really good. However, I bought the Sigma 24-70, 70-200 and 120-300 over the Canon versions, so I wouldn't be afraid to buy a Sigma 10-20. I like the extra range of the Canon, and it was reasonablly close in price, so I went for it. I don't regret it.

Thank you,

Chad McCan

Just to finish off the thread,i have orderd a Sigma and will take delivery on Tuesday. I could see no point in buying the canon, over the Sigma apart from having the word Canon on it.
thanks for your posts.

You'll enjoy for sure. All three of the popular super wide APS-C designed wide angles are very good lens, hard to go wrong with any of them.
