Hi,

I have a 10D which, of course, does not have a APS-C sensor, and I'm looking for something wider than my Canon 20-35mm lens.

The problem I'm facing is that lenses like the Canon 10-22, Sigma 10-20 and the Tokina 12-24 are all for APS-C sensored cameras.

Also, I don't care for the Sigma 12-24 for a couple of reasons. One, it doesn't allow front filters, something I need for my landscapes, and, two, it has a fixed lens hood.

Are there any other options out there for my 10D?

Thank you for any/all input.

The lens "cap" for the 12-24 comes in 2 pieces, the cap proper and a band which slides over the built-in hood. This is threaded for filters and may accept a polarizer, although polarizers with UWA apre very ticklish. It'll also take rear-mounted gel filters. Your only other options are a few 14 mm primes.

correct me if im wrong? and i certainly could be. but doesnt the 20D have the same size sensor as APS-C cameras, it just doesnt have the EF-S mount, since it didnt exist at the time. In which case wouldnt the 10-20 sigma work fine?

I thought the 10D had a crop sensor, but does not utilize the -S mounts. The Sigma 10-20mm should work on the 10D. Go to a camera shop and try it out... I know some have put the lens on some of the FF cameras.

yea if the 10D was full frame..... well i think a lot more people would own it just for that alone. the 10D is defintly a crop sensor, just predating the EF-S mount

You're definitely correct, it's a 1.6 crop sensor. My understanding is that you cannot use EF-S lenses with this camera. Having said that, I honestly don't know if that's due to the mount itself or sensor size.

It has to do with the mount. The -S series lenses protrude into the camera further than EF lenses. That said the Sigma 10-20mm has been mounted on EF mounts.

The Sigma 10-20 and Tokina 12-24 have EF mounts and are designed for 1.6 crop cameras, either will work with your 10D. Only Canons EF-S mount won't work, but third party manufacturers just use the standard EF mount.

I'm taking pictures of everything, so go ahead and take this place away from me.

Any ideas as to why B&H has a warning on these lenses that they'll only work on APS-C sensored cameras?

Either one of those lenses would be plenty wide for me. Thanks for the info!

Because the sensor side image projected by the lenses is not large enough for a 36mm FF sensor. Less glass is used because it only has to create an APS-C sized sensor plane image. If you mounted the Sigma or Tokina EF for APS-C lenses to a 5D or 1D, you'd probably get serious vignetting :).

Ok, I get it. Well, that's fantastic news then and I'll go ahead and put the Sigma 10-20mm on my wishlist. ;)

Thank you Steve.

Yes a 10D is a APS-C sensor (1.6 crop), but does not have the EF-S mount.

More problematically is the mirror might hit the rear element of the lens even if you modified a EF-S lens to mount on it.

It's a WARNING for non-APS-C sensor users. You have that smaller sensor, so you are fine. I have mounted the Sigma 10-20 on my 5D fine, just vignettes like crazy. I must say that the Sigma 10-20 was an excellent excellent lens. I think that the crop cameras have the 1-up on wide angle options. The WA lenses for FF don't come close in quality for the Canon / Sigma 10-20/22. These are fine lenses. You will love the Sigma!

Lester/Spencer,
Thank you both very much for your input. I really appreciate it and look forward to getting the Sigma 10-20.
Regards,
Robert
