Hi all, i was thinking of purchasing this lens, i have just been given a £70 rebate bvoucher, but i asked a guy about it at my local dealer, and he said its not that impressive, i had done my research on this lens, in forums etc, and it has always been popular, what are your thoughts is it a must have lens, i cant stretch to the 16-35.
So far i have a 20d with kit lens and 50mm 1.4. I was rready to buy it, and the dealers comment has thrown me??? am so confused help me!
Your thoughts would be appreciated, thanks, A.

Its a damn fine lens, and you wont hear very many complaints about it.

Didn't we hash this out just last week >

Anyway don't believe anyone that tells you otherwise that the 17-40L is "not impressive". Either they never used one or had a bad copy.

Treat me like a tourist,
I think the 17-40L is a great lens on my 10D and 5D and if it broke today I would try to get another (its that good to my eyes).

Well, without more from the dealer on what was not that impressive, I would not be too impressed with his opinion, given the broad amount of postive feedback about this lens on the various forums.

I would not be without my 17-40L...Lightweight, wonderful sharp images. I love it as a walk around, love it for landscapes, and it even takes good protraits....Buy It Now, but if you can avoid that store I would do so. I wouldn't give my money to anyone who gives that advice!

I took it and the 85 f/1.8 as my only two lens on a three week trip and it was great. It's a great landscape, architecure lens, and it's decent for group pictures as long as there is light.

Its either the 17-40L or the 10-22, both are fine lenses. Can't go wrong

The positive reviews from actual users of the lens is close to 100% most anywhere you look. I've had mine for 9months and love it.

Not impressive? Yeah, find a new dealer. This guy obviously doesn't know what he's talking about.
