My less than a month old 70-200 IS L dropped from the bag on concrete floor and the front protective glass of the lens seems to have chipped a bit from the inside. This was my first L lens and a pretty expensive one for me as well. What can i say, im in a very crappy mood. I want to check with you guys if this might be repairable, its just the front glass which seems to be chipped and the internal lens seems to be working fine including the IS feature. Im planning to send it to Canon in new jersey for repair once im back from my california vacation(this saturday). Thanks for lending an ear for my rant.

Ouch. Canon will require you to send the lens in before giving you an estimate. So send it in and go from there. Here's to a not-so-high-repair-bill. Enjoy your vacation regardless; you can't do anything about it right now anyways.

That really sucks. A few weeks ago I lost my first lens, a sigma 70-300 5.6. I had my bag on the ground next to my leg at an angel game and a kid kicked it. The lens bounced down a few concrete stairs and the kid didn't even turn around. I replaced it with a new 70-200 IS as well, and hope to good nothing happens to it. It’s worth more then my car!

I hear your ranting, and feel your pain.

I had a lens (much cheaper though) fall in front of me from the Camera mount, and it was a horrible experience, not to have reflexes fast enough to catch it before hitting the ground. That is a 'thump, Crack' one does not easily forget.

Best wishes with Canon, they will bring it back to life, and also good luck on your vacation, have a good time in Sunny California. It would probably work out best if you sent it for repair right before going away, so you can have it back shortly after your return.

My recurring nightmare is that of the bag opening, and one of my better lenses falling into oblivion. This shows that whether L or EX or plastic, no lens can or will take a fall like that. C'mon Canon, get going with the Lens Airbag Feature !!...

Cheers,

Maybe just keep using it?

My enlarger lens is cracked, but works ok.

Naa, get it fixed. you'll be happier that way, get it perfect again. It won't cost much as you think either - and be sure and let us know how it all turns out.

Thanks so much for hearing me out guys. I agree with Steve, it just wont feel right until i get it fixed. Mario, i am on a vacation in CA right now which ends on saturday, the lens fell while visiting universal studio's yesterday. I did get some fantastic shots with it of Yosemite and Mono lake etc which ill post up in the landscape forums once i get back. Hoping Canon would be able to fix it up like new.

I bet the feeling of getting your new and fixed 70-200 will cover the cost of the repair :)

Man I really feel for you as I had to get my 70-200 2.8L repaired after doing the exact same thing. Drop it onto concrete in it's carry bag - instantly no zoom but everything else worked. Luckily no lenses were cracked or chipped.
Canon fixed the broken part worth AU$ 4.37 unfortunaltely with AU$ 387.00 worth of labour - good as new now.
I hope they can fix it without it costing you an arm and a leg.
