I understand your pain. I picked up my bag yesterday and it was unzipped. Fortunately all my gear landed on the carpet and all was ok, but it was a scary half second hearing them hit the floor.

Definately get it fixed when you can, but you may still be able to use it until you do. If the crack/chip isn't huge it might not show up at all.

I dropped my 50mm once and I know that sound and pain....ouch and continued agony. I didn't chip any glass but the focus wasn't working manual or auto. I went online at the Canon website, logged in the return and put the paper print out into the package. I was afraid because the lens was out of warranty and something like this isn't covered. Within 3 weeks Canon returned the lens....I couldn't tell the difference from a new one...and the repair was free of charge.

Three things, I have to say about this are 1)those lenses are very well built and there probably was no internal damage in your lens 2)Canon appreciates your purchase of such a high-end lens that they will probably not charge you. 3)Canon repair is great. Thank you Canon.

I don't think it will be terribly expensive if it's just the front element, but it's best to send it in and have Canon check everything. I've been lucky a couple of time. Once in the Grand Canyon I fell and landed on top of my 10D and my 28-70 f2.8L (despite trying to twist in mid-air), and just this summer my 1DMkIIN with my 24-105 f4L IS rolled from the back seat of my truck to the gravel road (in very slow motion - but I was simply too shocked to respond). Fortunately for me, both survived with no issues (though the same can't be said for my blood pressure or sanity).

My less than a month old 70-200 IS L dropped from the bag on concrete floor and the front protective glass of the lens seems to have chipped a bit from the inside. This was my first L lens and a pretty expensive one for me as well. What can i say, im in a very crappy mood. I want to check with you guys if this might be repairable, its just the front glass which seems to be chipped and the internal lens seems to be working fine including the IS feature. Im planning to send it to Canon in new jersey for repair once im back from my california vacation(this saturday). Thanks for lending an ear for my rant.

Why didn't you have your hood on?

Or - if you couldn't use the hood, why didn't you have a UV filter on?

That really sucks. A few weeks ago I lost my first lens, a sigma 70-300 5.6. I had my bag on the ground next to my leg at an angel game and a kid kicked it. The lens bounced down a few concrete stairs and the kid didn't even turn around. I replaced it with a new 70-200 IS as well, and hope to good nothing happens to it. It’s worth more then my car!

the front element for the non IS version is ~$400 for the part. I would assume the IS version will be similar

I say if it doesn't interfere with the shot, don't fix it. If it bothers you, then fix the front element.
I guess there are times when a UV filter may have protected the front element in cases such as this.

Yeah... my 70-200 has a nick in it and I was going to get it fixed. Decided not to since it was soo expensive and the nick didn't show up in any pics so I use it as is.

Thanks again everyone. To answer the hood question, the lens was inside the bag and not on the camera and hence no filter/hood.The bag zipper was open and my wife picked the bag up without noticing this and stuff fell out including the 5d with the tamron lens on it which thankfully remained on top of the bag. The hood was on the lens backwards. I think ill send it to Canon and see what they can do about it, i definetly cannot live with the chipped lens.
