I dropped my EF 100 f/2.8 macro back in March. Afterwards the rear element was VERY loose (though nothing was physically broken). So I sent it in to Canon.

Not only did they fix it for free (it was still under warranty but they didn't have to fix a dropped lens for free) but I would swear that the lens came back focusing much more accurately than when it was new. So I guess what I'm saying is that your lens could come back better than ever. Good luck.

Got the lens back yesterday finally, they've fixed it as good as new :) Total cost was 564$ including 15$ for shipping it back. My home insurance is going to cover it for me, led to increase of 10$ on my insurance, but thats allright.
Im a very happy camper now :D

Thanks again everyone. To answer the hood question, the lens was inside the bag and not on the camera and hence no filter/hood.The bag zipper was open and my wife picked the bag up without noticing this and stuff fell out including the 5d with the tamron lens on it which thankfully remained on top of the bag. The hood was on the lens backwards. I think ill send it to Canon and see what they can do about it, i definetly cannot live with the chipped lens.

i've heard several people say they picked up their bag and lenses fell out because the bag wasn't zipped.

what kind of bags are you guys using?

i'd recommend something different. i use the domke F2 and whether the flap is secured or not lenses won't fall out when you pick up the bag.

I don't think it will be terribly expensive if it's just the front element, but it's best to send it in and have Canon check everything. I've been lucky a couple of time. Once in the Grand Canyon I fell and landed on top of my 10D and my 28-70 f2.8L (despite trying to twist in mid-air), and just this summer my 1DMkIIN with my 24-105 f4L IS rolled from the back seat of my truck to the gravel road (in very slow motion - but I was simply too shocked to respond). Fortunately for me, both survived with no issues (though the same can't be said for my blood pressure or sanity).

i had that happen too. i put my camera on the back seat of my truck and it slid over against the door.

when i opened the door the camera fell out. luckily it hit the hood and battery grip and there was no damage except for a couple of scuffs.

Ouch - an expensive repair! But a good plus for the insurance, it's great to read a thread like this with a happy ending.

Thankyou everyone :) I tried out the lens over the weekend, sharp as ever and in perfect shape.
Ed Rader- I use a Tamrac adventure pack for my gear right now, its compact and easy to carry around. Ill check out the Domke you mentioned, thanks for that.
