I'll be flying tomorrow with a tripod for the first time. I've got the Dynatran carbon fiber version, model 94 with a ball head. Can I carry this on or should I put it in it's box and check it?

From what I've been told, the airlines aren't big fans of a tripod or monopod being carried onboard a plane. I haven't tried to do it yet, but that's what I've heard...

I have successfully carried my monopod on but I haven't tried it in some time. I know for a fact that tripods are not allowed though some people do get them through. The contention is that the legs can be removed and used as a weapon.

I have checked my tripod and monopod along with allot of other gear in a hard sided suitcase and I have never yet had a problem after dozens of trips this way.

I would suggest that you get it in your luggage or at least be prepared to put it in your luggage.

I disassemble mine and pack it in a suitcase. They're getting extremely picky about carryon stuff these days.

I carry my monopod on all the time... never a question. Should be ok. Call the airline - the would know for sure.

Carried on a tripod with no problem the week of the liquid scare. I half expected the security folks to tell me to check it, but they let it through without a problem.

Of course, the standard YMMV disclaimer applies here. I hadn't heard of any problems with one, but, who knows...

I should add it was strapped to the side of my backpack, so maybe no one really noticed?

I had to send mine to baggage last time I was on a Canadian flight, something about it being too long or something to fit in the overhead compartment. Needless to say that when I arrived at my destination the head of the tripod was broken and I had to replace it. Wasn't impressed travelled 3000km to take some pictures in BC and no tripod.

I packed my tripod in the case.
Reasons...
Most people would not associate value with a tripod so not likely to be stolen.
If a Tripod is not sturdy enough to be bagged then It probably isn't worth carrying:)
Run the risk of confiscation if hand carried going thro the final checks :(

This is key for everyone to remember. Just because you happened to get through security with it you are not home free. Anyone right up to the flight attendant on board can and will ask you to check anything that they deem unfit. There isn't much of an appeal process and any vigorous appealing might have you deplaned as well.
