I thought they were mostly used for getting nicer contrast in clouds when there is also blue sky behind them. :-P

They darken the sky by filtering out scattered (backscatter) light bouncing of suspended particles in the air. They work the same way on non-metallic reflections, say in water, glass, or paint.

For what I shoot, I don't really use it.

I only put on a filter when I shoot in a place that might have things like sand particles or heavy debris jump onto the front element (like a windy day at a beach, etc.).

Other than that, I don't use any filter and just rely on the hood. I've never used one "in practice" for over half a decade.

That was my plan. :) I think that's a clever one... or what? :)

Jon: Thanks for the polarizer explanation. So is the polarizer better on a wide lens or a long lens?

Yes.

Seriously, on an ultra-wide you'll see the effects of the sun angle on polarization in the sky while on a tele, you won't. If you like gradations from side to side, even the widest UW will use a polarizer well; likewise for close-ups where the sun angle's less a factor. It works the same on all; just some people don't care for the effect in some conditions on some lenses.

Check out the paintball thread :D
Shattered filters are semi-common and even a front element on a 70-200 f2.8 L (if I remember correctly).
