At my usual spot - St Mary's Island, Whitley Bay in North East England.

The weather today was fantastic, and there were birds everywhere. Nothing unusual, but that's OK.

All with 30D + 100-400mm, handheld at 400mm.

Dunlin.

Dunlin. This is deliberately "low key" from the bird's point of view - I wanted to get the behaviour rather than it just be another dunlin portrait.

Stonechat. This is a youngster (this year's fledging) but it already has the habit of being approachable and conspicuous - which is why photographers love 'em!

Starlings. I love these guys too. They're seen by the public over here and elsewhere to be drab, noisy nuisances, but in Summer dress, and in Summer light, they can look positively tropical!

Starlings. Dull, they're not...

Starling. And finally... A behaviour shot really (though I love the colours around the bird) - people don't really realise how successful these birds can be at making a living on the seashore.

Excellent shots Keith, and those are very good starling shots, nice colurs and details in them. All are good shots, well done on having a good good day.

Lovely series! I like the Starlings that you have captured. They are richly exposed and well lit, the details are very nice.

Very nice series and you had great light. I like them all and I think the second starling shot might be my favourite.

Great set of shots - love the birds in their environment type shots that you got. I used to catch starlings as a kid (never harmed them) and loved the colours in their feathers - almost like a bubble in the bath with purples and greens.

Wow, what a fantastic series of image Keith. All stunning, love the stonechat. Even though I'm not a fan/lover of starlings your images here have shown how they are a very attractive looking bird still indeed. Excellent work.

Very nice work! Love the Dunlins and Stonechat. Ha, I never think of the starling as a 'shorebird'! They really are pretty in the right plumage.

Thanks all.

Re: the starlings - I guess I notice the behavioural stuff more because I'm a birder with a camera, rather than a photographer that happens to shoot birds.

So, I can't fail to be impressed by how versatile they are - they effectively exploit pretty much any niche available to them, which indicates a real intelligence; and they look great.

I still remember how impressed I was as a kid (maybe 12 years old?) to read that they were able to impersonate the ringing of "trimphones" (the first phones in the UK that didn't rely on an actual bell) so effectively that the owners of those phones would keep running into the house to answer a starling call!

;)
