I'm flitting in and out today, since I am at work, with all but a handful of others. My year-end stuff was completed yesterday, so it is pretty darn quiet today.

Cat...of course as we finalize plans, we hope to be able to connect with some of our POTN friends where ever and whenever our travels take us.:D

The Oregon Coast is a beautiful place to vacation....;)

How far are you from Portland? I really need to get up there before too long.

Even from Portland, you can go over to Astoria/Seaside very quickly... From there, you can trip on down 101 through the best stuff Oregon has to offer, IMO. Tillamook, Lincoln City, Depoe Bay, Newport, Florence, Coos Bay/North Bend, Bandon, etc...

That would be fun. I've driven the 101 coastal route through California, but not Oregon. I need to go to Portland to visit Virgil Earp's grave. I've visited and photographed the graves of all the major players from the 1880's Tombstone, AZ era except Virgil Earp (in Portland) and Doc Holliday (Glenwood Springs, CO). When I ever finally get around to scheduling those two trips, I need to load up on other things to fill the time with, too, and a drive back down the coast would be very cool.

Depending on driving conditions and, well, the driver :) I can make it from Coquille to Portland in 3.5 hours.

Well, be sure you let the Colorado contingent when you're headed this way! :D

In that case, I could probably make it in 2.5 hours. I have a bit of a lead foot...

Actually, my cousins live in the SF Bay area, I had suggested that and to either drive south along the coast or north along the coast. My preference would be north except for a day trip to the Monteray area.

Curt did not travel much as a kid/young adult what with being from a farm family and having his own dairy for a few years. My family vacationed every summer, I was stationed in Texas and California after school, and for 9 months lived near Seattle. Most places we go are a repeat for me and brand new for him.;) Once in awhile we hit where neither of us have been. Other than the trip between Victorville, CA and Las Vegas, I have not seen anything else in the area. And its been at least 5 years since I was in LV so there are a lot of new things on the strip to see as well.

Beth, I would love to come to Colorado and ski, which, would be a good trip right now, if we could get in;) How are you doing through the current storm?

About 10 years ago we drove down through Central Oregon to Northern California and made our way back up the 101 to Portland and they back home, camping the whole way.

This was a 2 week trip and could have been longer, we really enjoyed the beautiful scenery. Almost every day I eat out of a Murtlewood salad bowl from the set we bought on that trip.

I would love to head down that way again some time in the future.

Actually, the airport has remained open for round two, so come on over!! :D

In Denver proper, I don't think the storm has been quite as bad as they originally thought. It snowed most of the night, but very, very lightly. I don't think I got more than four or five more inches. But it's not over yet.... the weather guy just said we could get another foot before tomorrow is over. But it's coming down so slow, that it's pretty easy to keep up with the shovelling.

A look down my sidewalk

Hi guys. Spent a few days away, but had lots of fun (and even more food - groan!!)

Anyhow, Ali's parents gave me a Joe Cornish landscape photography book ( Clicky (external link))

Looks very good so far, so I'll be taking some lessons from it. Where'd I put that tripod...?

Just wondering.. Any merit in this? I kind of like it in an understated way...

Hey Pete.

Good to see you back online. It's been a bit quiet through the days - I had been wondering where you were and hoping it was just away on a visit. We've had enough of people being injured or ill on here ;)

That book looks pretty good! I received a couple of titles written by Lee Frost. Nearly finished this one < Link > (external link). Very good. Lots of subjects and advice for taking shots indoors and with the minimum of lighting too - lots of window light suggestions. Quite UK based in some of the recommendations and a distict film bias (written before digital had sufficient quality to be used for the markets being talked about). Also got this one (external link) which looks a bit tougher to read but also good.

Thanks Mark. Yeah, been around doing all the visitations over the holiday season, so no been too active here. I agree with what you say about film cameras. A lot of these landscape photography book seem to use large and medium format cameras quite a bit as well. I'm just trying to take on board the advice about composure and lighting. Having discovered fairly recently that my 10-20 goes down to f/32 at the 20mm, I'm fairly eager to see just how far I can push the DOF. Can I get some half-respectable Ansel framings? Dunno...

QUOTED IMAGE

That does have a certain appeal to it. The balanced composition with the horizon through the middle works with the treatment to make a calming image and I love the different tree shapes that are included.

[Camera club head on ;)]: Hmm. Not quite sure what to think of this shot. Very static composition with the horizon running through the middle of the picture. Not sure whether the foreground really adds much - perhaps try cropping a little higher if it's possible given the resolution. I can see what the author has attempted but really I think a reshoot is needed, possibly concentrating more on the trees on the left two thirds of the image and reducing the amount of ground. Like the old feeling the treatment has given it but just a bit too little contrast and dynamic range.

Oh and there's noticeable sensor dust too. [Camera club head off]

Now re-read my thoughts above the 'club head' bit for what really should be said. ;)
