I would like to take a moment and whine a little, if ya'll don't mind. If you do mind, just skip my post
I am on a quest for 'tack sharp'. I have not achieved it, not once, since moving to digital. I know it's a little trickier than film. I know that a good photographer can make magic, no matter what gear he/she has. I think I actually pulled sharper images out of my p&s than I have out of Daisy :( I try to aim for f/8-11 whenever possible. I have my focus point at center, what else can I do here?

Wow, 1/125, at f5, with no flash, and I would guess handheld. I'd say you did a good job. That's some tough shooting conditions. The 50 may have helped some.

Thanks Jack. Yes handheld. Don't like the tripod in the gym. I thought about the 50, but I have a little trouble with the focus on that baby:rolleyes: Haven't quite got her dialed in yet...

tamron 28-75 f/2.8
canon 70-200 f/4
gear DOES have its limitations :)

you also might try photozone.de, look for reviews of your camera.. they should have real world tests as to which aperature your camera lens will be the sharpest.. given you dont have a bad copy of the lens

Terri:
I too have problems with sharpness. *sigh*
For the longest time, I thought that there was a problem with me.
Then I thought it was the lens
Then I thought it was the camera
then I thought it was me.
LOL

I keep working at it. I think it takes practice. And skill. And a bit of luck. ;)

If you're trying for tack sharp under those conditions, then that's the problem. You would need better light or a whole lot more money for a better lens. That's my opinion. I think most would have gone with the 50 and did the best they could have. Some messing with the white balance to get something closer to white would probably help some but the soft feel is a direct result of the lighting. Shooting with such a slow shutter speed you will get a little blur because of the movement. Volleyball is a fast moving sport, they won't stand still for you to get the shot.

My eyes see well enough, and the camera is capable enough, now if they would just work together.

Ok....this little guy (he was TINY) let me photograph him today. This is one of about 15 shots I took of him. It is the only one that was sharp. ANd on closer inspection, its just his front leg that is sharp, LOL. Focusing error on my part.
No PP except conversion.

I'm not too disappointed with these. I knew going in I was limited. And I would so love to have gotten a couple of true freeze frames *sigh* oh well. There are some keepers out of today, and I tried a couple "interprative" shots that may have some potential, I'll see tomorrow.
