To be honest, I'm not sure. Since I've had Nifty in my possesion, I've tried to be consiencious and use him at every opportunity, so my other lenses haven't really had much of a look-in, even my 24-105 which (as everyone says) is the ideal partner for the 5D.

Actually, having a 50mm on a full frame camera is wonderful. 50mm on the 30D was always challenging as the framing was so difficult, but on the 5D, it's perfect; very comfortable to use. Nifty will be moving on as soon as I figure out who and where it's going to, and then it'll be business as usual with my other Lenses...!

Remember the set of pics I was making for my sister that I asked for critique on a few days ago?

The whole phrase "Live well, laugh often, love much" was a common saying in my home when I was growing up. My mom has it HUGE written on the wall above the dining room. So that phrase is well known to all of us.

I made the fixes suggested here, printed and framed them, then gave them to my sister yesterday.
Incidentally.... though I find it incredibly funny...
that same day, my sister gave me a cute little trinket that says " Wine much, laugh often" She knows me well. :p
(She didn't know I was making the photos for her, it was a total coincidence.)

Um, yeah... The f/1.8 is very Fisher-Price. When focussing, it even sounds Fisher-Price!!

It gives really nice sharp shots though, so can't grumble that much.

Hey Jamie? If you get a few minutes today, could you direct me to a good tutorial for taking action shots and/or panning? I've been reading threads on POTN but the advice is often conflicting.

Here are some good comments form JT

https://photography-on-the.net …php?p=1406848&postcount=6

This thread has some drama in it but JT, Jim (VW Pilot) and Todd put out some good info.

https://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=175194

Those are the two that I found right off the bat.

I find that I like the styles of these three guys and they are the ones that I learned what little that I know from. They are all members of www.automotivephoto.net (external link) you might want to check that out. Just remember to register using your real name and choose me (Jamie Holladay) as a referer when you register.

You might do a search in Motorsports for John Thawley, TCorzett, and VWPilot, and find some more info.

What I found helpful when I was first learning (and I am still learning and have a long way to go) was to go out to a busy street and practice. Or go to a local event and practice. What I did was practice "getting the pan". Not that I have mastered that but now I am trying to work on compostition.

I posted some photos from Barber that I took right after I got my 70-200 f/4 both here on POTN and APN, the comments form the pro's were basically good pans now watch your compostion. Try this, put the car here... etc. The good thing about that series was JT was also at the race and was able give more pertinant infor.

Hope this helps. I will be glad to share anything that I might know.

No problem.

Just a couple of quick tips.

  • AI Servio
  • Slow Shutter speed. Start at 180 and go down as you feel comfortable
  • Plant your feet and rotate at the waste.
  • Lock on your focus point and follow the car until you see IT. I don't use burst mode but some do.
  • Leave room for the car to move into or show where the car has been
  • A good rule for croping - keep it porportional to the original in case some one wants a print.
  • Most people like the car at the bottom of the frame.
  • If you are trying an angle make it make sense
  • Watch for background - full stands are good - corner worker stands are bad (you get my drift)
  • For front shots faster shutter more DOF - mono pods are good for these shots
  • Going away shots - Pre focus on something ahead of the vehicle - or just get lucky.
  • Creative shots - shoot through tree limbs (trust me that can be cool)
  • Sometimes missed pans are ART.

**Disclaimer** I am far from a pro. The above tips are those that have been give to me in the past. They may or may not be the "right" way to do it.

It's also fun practicing panning on street cars as you sometimes get some neat candids from drivers wonder why you're pointing a camera at them.

The downside is, that the often think you're police and tend to slow down to an un-race like speed...

I REALLY want to go down to Portland, OR this year and try my hand at some panning shots. I am fairly certain we don't have any circuit racing here in WA but I've heard there is in OR. I LOVE the shots I've seen of Jamie's and other's on these forums of that genre of shooting. I love cars and cameras so what better than to combign them? :)

Good morning all. Settling in here at work although I will be leaving in about 15 minutes to head to the chirpractor for a spinal manipulation  :)

Remembering my holidday in WA, it would be pretty cool to have panning shots of the harvesters collecting all that wheat. Panning shots with star-trails...!!

Umm.. I just thought about really slowly panning one of those harvesters as it went past. Probably not possible though..

What WOULD be cool is an ultra long exposure of a landscape with one of those working overnight and seeing the light trails working their way over the prairie...
