Panning isn't something I've tried much of. My one attempt was a dismal failure, lol. I prefer my subjects to sit still nicely until I have the shot I want :)

Man, I tried my hand at panning on cars today at lunch. Bugster and I stood near an intersection and shot away while people gazed at us wonderingly... NOne of my photos turned out well though. I cut cars in half, blurred just about everything and under exposed a lot. The sun was hitting the street at odd places and making lighting somewhat difficult. I'm also wondering, is it better to shoot at a greater distance from your subject or is it ok to be within about 40 feet of them?

Depends on your lens. Most of the Barber stuff I shot I had to be 40-50 feet from the cars.
